Yalines Torres Is One Swingin’ Babysitter
January 14, 2008 by impqueen

Hartford, Conn. - Yalines Torres, 25, may have known that you don’t shake a baby, but it never occurred to her you couldn’t swing one. She tried it out on FridayFriday reviews
, putting 18-month old Elijah Gasque into a sleeping bag on Friday night and swinging the toddler around over her head. The game came to a thudding halt when Torres let the sleeping bag go and Elijah’s head hit a metal doorframe and broke.
I think “oops” might be a little understatement.
Torres was babysitting (of course) while Elijah’s single mom worked (of course). Elijah’s mother picked Torres because they lived in the apartment building and because Torres was, by neighbors’ accounts, a good mother who was good with kids. Until she turns them into human projectiles.
Torres was initially charged with risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment, but when Elijah was found to be brain dead, police said additional charges were expected later. She’sShe reviews
held on $500,000.00 bond.
There have been a few reports that Torres was depressed. Well, lots of people get depressed, but most of them don’t swing a kid into a door frame. Whether the babysitter was angry, depressed, or “just” playing, she was incredibly stupid, and now Elijah is dead.
Elijah’s mother chose to donate her baby’s organs, a brave choice that will at least save the lives of other children. I hope she can find some comfort in knowing that Elijah will help other babies live.
Guess we need to add “Sleeping Bag Rocket Ship” to games not to let the babysitter play.

Whenever I hear about sleeping bag deaths, I always think of this:

The FUCK was she thinking?
2:21 pm on January 14th, 2008
Appparently, she is incapable of thinking as I would assume she has nothing but cobwebs and shit-pond scum between her ears.
Anyone with even HALF a brain would have stopped to consider the fact that placing a child in a sleeping bag and swinging them around could have suffocated them .

To sad to comment – other than what a dumbass. Talk about the worst idea in the long sad history of bad ideas. Damn and double damn.
2:28 pm on January 14th, 2008
WTF? Why do this? What an idiot?
Like humping tag, but deadlier.
2:32 pm on January 14th, 2008
That is one dumb lady. I wonder if she tried to lie first, because dayum, I’d much rather say that the kid pissed me off and I hit him than to admit to something THAT stupid.
2:32 pm on January 14th, 2008
Maybe her own children had positive experiences of being swung around in a sleeping bag,
NOT!

This woman was/is completely disconnected. Scary thought of her being a mother too. It kind of reminds me of the Lionel Tate case, the complete disconnection from all sense or forethought. No sense of protection or care-taking. She behaved more like a 10 year old than like a mother.
Poor baby, he was beautiful

If she wasn’t depressed before I hope she fucking is now. How do you continue after doing something so ….
no new words.

This is from the fox news article, the baby was going to surgery for his organs.
“(The boy’s mother) is going through every emotion of grief. She’s up there still clinging to his bedside until they take him to the (operating room),” Needham said. “She can’t leave. She feels like she’s leaving her baby again.”
That’s heart wrenching

Every time you think you’ve heard it all…another story pops up about HOW stupid people can be! Did she think she was swinging around a bag of garbage??? She must had been swinging fast & rough for the sleeping bag & baby to land so hard into the metal frame (sleeping bag didn’t provide any landing cushion either.)
I’m sure the poor mother will feel guilty for a very long time for leaving her baby with that Sitter…

What’s her depression got to do with murdering her neighbor’s child? What a bunch of garbage.

I’m not believing the sleeping bag story. I mean, maybe he was in one or maybe not, but I think she intended to do this baby harm. I’m glad she has been charged in this. Now instead of “shaken baby syndrome” we will have “swingin baby syndrome.” This is why I sayed home with my kids until they were in school.

ERNurse, I love your line, “Shit Avoidance Advisor.”
I’m trying to imagine how one swings a baby in a sleeping bag. You’d have to have a pretty big room to swing the length of a sleeping bag. But maybe it was a kid’s bag. I’m not up on these things.
How sad that here is another mother with no one to help her, so she has to trust her baby to a relative stranger. Did anyone read about the toddler who starved to death after his mother died? She laid dead for some weeks as the kid toddled around the apt and searched for food.

my god, no! Where did you read about that??!!

Get ready for a horror story on this one. Little kid with dead mother. Social worker goes for monthly check on them. Finds them both dead.

She’s got the step-stair perp eyes AND the “why be mean to me?” perp bitch look.

When i was about 8 and my cousin was 2 I played “Airplane” with him. He asked me to let him go so he could fly and i did. Thankfully, he was fine
he just cried alittle bit. I could not have been going too fast cause I was 8 and really small at that.
But again…….I was 8. Not 25 and obviously did not have kids of my own! She should have known better.

Wrybread thanks for the link on the other story. That was a hard one to read. I’ve so many questions about what the hell happened.

She’s been rearrested on more serious charges pertaining to this case. I didn’t know you had to be re-arrested like that.
“Police said Torres first told investigators that Elijah was roughhousing with her 3-year-old son. Then, police said Torres told them Elijah had a seizure while playing Ring Around the Rosie. Finally, police said Torres told them of how she put Elijah in the sleeping bag. Police said Torres admitted that she had initially lied about the boy’s injuries because people would think she intentionally hurt the boy if she told the truth.”
Yeah, better to be known as a dumb-ass killer than an intentional killer. That’s true.

yeah, my dad used to do something similiar to me, when I was a child.
but he put me in a blanket & swung me around… & no where close to swinging over his head.. he’d just spin me in circles not more than a couple feet off the ground, if I had fallen out I wouldnt have gotten more than a bruise on my elbow or something…
I dont think it’s that uncommon of an idea for a game.. she just did it in a dangerous way, sleepingbag = suffocation & a slippery surface on the outside, hence her letting go acidentally. I feel bad for this one, the guilt you would feel harming someone else’s child when you’re supposed to be taking care of them would be overwhelming.

More information on this:
When officers arrived, Torres made conflicting statements to them about the injury, saying her 2-year-old son struck him in the head with a toy xylophone, and that Elijah may have been hurt when he fell after she twirled him in the air and set him down, the report states.
After more questioning, Torres said the child was injured in a game in which she bundled him in a sleeping bag and jogged through her apartment with the bag slung over her shoulder, according to the report.
Going through one doorway, Torres lost her balance and the bag struck the door frame twice, police said.
She told investigators she heard the boy whimper.
When she opened the bag, the boy was pale and not breathing, the report states.
Here she is in court:

If I was her I would wish I was dead… accident or not.. what a sin.

Torres, 26, was sentenced to 16 years in prison (On September 18,2009)She pleaded guilty in June to first-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor.
Judge David Gold gave her a full sentence of 30 years, suspended after 16, followed by five years of probation.
I do believe it was an accident! Tragic. I hope Torres’ children are being loved and cared for, while she serves her time.
