Michel Veillette Kills Family, Ruins House

UPDATE 4/15/08 – Michel Veillette is dead. He hung himself with a sheet in his jail cell and was discovered at 1:39 a.m. today, approximately three months after he allegedly killed his wife and children.

bilde7ud1 Michel Veillette Kills Family, Ruins House

Mason, Ohio - You know, if you’re gonna off your whole family, there just seem better ways to do it than setting fire to your $436,000 slice of suburban real estate, effectively ruining the market for everyone around you. But nooooo, Michel Veillette, 34, is not only a selfish homicidal bastard, he’s also a bad neighbor.

Veillette capped off his workweek FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews night with a little family en flambe. After beating and stabbing his wife Nadya Ferrari-Veillette, he then set fire to his three-story brick behemoth with his dead wife and the family’s four children inside. It is thought that the children were already in bed on the third floor of the home when their father set the house on fire. Because he’s nice like that.

Marguerite Veillette, 8 , Vincent Veillette, 4 , and Jacob and Mia Veillette, 3, were killed in the fire. Three of the children were alive when firefighters arrived, but died shortly after arriving at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Mason. Authorities thought at first that all the victims died of smoke inhalation, but realized later that Nadya had been stabbed and had head trauma indicative of a beating. The children were not stabbed, and all the victims were found in third-floor bedrooms.

Michel Veillette jumped from a second-story window (above) and appeared to have a few well-deserved knife wounds as well. He’s in serious but stable condition and is now single with no kids. He’s been charged with aggravated arson, one count of murder for his wife, and four counts of aggravated murder for his kids. Which sounds sort of like a nice way to say he was really, really pissed off when he killed them.

Michel Veillette is a self-employed engineeer from Quebec who traveled extensively for work, spending only a few days a month at home. Margeurite’s teacher reports that the second-grader never mentioned her father at all. And employees at the Colors Cafe’ in Mason, where Nadya Ferrari-Veillette worked part-time, remember her answering “Who?” when asked about her husband. Nadya’s co-workers report that Nadya was bubbly and sweet, but troubled by her marriage.

Michel Veillette’s mother and brother say that when they last spoke with Michel on Firday, he was driving home and anxious to get there and see his children. Was he planning on murdering his family then, or did something happen to set him off once he arrived home?

What does an affluent Canadian contract engineer living in Ohio really have to get that upset about? Did L.L. Bean run out of turtlenecks? Did one of the kids get a C on the semester grade report? If the guy had an adjustable-rate mortgage, I can kind of see burning the house down, but not with the family inside.

I’m waiting for the news that Veillette was up to his eyeballs in debt. Barring that, there’s gotta be a mistress out there somewhere who was pushing to take the relationship up a notch. No Amber Frey has yet been located, but given the nature of this crime, there’s either sex or money involved.

Update, 4/15/08 – Michel Veillette has committed suicide. He was found hanging in his cell at 1:39 a.m. Tuesday morning, a few weeks after being taken off suicide watch. Guess he won’t be going to trial after all. Thanks, Michel, for doing the right thing, although it would have been nicer to have done it before setting the house on fire and killing the family.

I am sick of these creeps offing their family because of whatever problems they are having. To bad he didn’t jump out the window BEFORE stabbing his wife and burning his kids.

My guess is this criminal mastermind was having an affair but didn’t want to spring for a divorce & 4 kids’ worth of child support.

He really thought he’d get away with it. What a dickhead.

Sadly his wife and kids are gone.
I hope I really hope his stab wounds were from his wife. Hope she got in some good shots on this ass before he jumped outta the window. Even better hope it injured him bad and while he’s doing time in prison some other criminal is parking his beef bus in turd town (one of my favorite lines) while this POS holds his own colostomy bag.

Yes, I agree with Dammitall. Let’s wait for the little girlfriend to show up. How did he get all four kids to stay in the house? I suspect we’ll learn they were drugged.

Michelle, that line works equally well both ways: “beef bus in turd town” and “turd bus in beef town.”

Yep, a girlfriend. He was only home for a few days a month because of his work. Either a girlfriend and he did’nt want the mess and expense of divorce or she said she wanted a divorce and he did’nt want to have to pay child support for the kids he barely knew.

I don’t know it if would be a word palindrome, but I’m sure its a hard truth that many men learn after they kill their families and jump out of windows and live to go to jail!

I think they’ll probably track the sidecar kitty cat down through cell phone records. She’ll not have known that he was married. She’ll be planning a Huge Wedding that he was planning to finance with the insurance money from the burnt house.

I’m waiting for the mistress to show up, or else evidence of serious financial concerns. A half-million dollar mortgage is nothin’ to sneer at.

I’m thinking of adding an Imp’s Beatdown Score to some of these posts with my own suggestions for implementation.

    Ex:

Michel Veillette Imp’s Beatdown Score: 9/10. Only because he didn’t rape the kids. Otherwise he’d have gotten the full monty.
Suggested Implements: dull knife, plastic bag, cigarette lighter.

I bet it was money. Look at the asshat’s photo in the article linked. Who would touch THAT? He’s lucky his wife would let him touch her enough to have the children they did. If they were already having marital problems, with or without a 3rd party involved, the cost of divorce and child support would push him over the edge.

It’s a shame he is such a weak person. He should have stayed and died in the fire too, then all his money worries would be over.

There is quite the rush to judgment here! Perhaps we should wait for all the details to come out before we lynch the guy.

For all we know, his wife and kids were just asking for this. The two older boys look like trouble-makers and that baby is obviously a screamer.

I am glad he’s alive, and I hope he doesn’t get the death penalty; assuming the state has the law.

His act was obviously triggered by some sort of a failure in his life, or maybe he just looked a few too many times in the mirror. Failures cause suffering, and the easiest way to put an end to them is by ceasing to exist; which he should’ve done instead of killing his family. People liike him need to live and continue to suffer. I don’t mind my tax dollar to pay for his life long ass rape.

Man work his arse off to support wife + kids. Man worked too hard and so never home. Man came home one night, saw wife with another man. Another man left in a panic. Man got in argument with wife. You can fill out the rest of the story.

Of cause I am making this up, just like every one of you since none of us know the truth. But I am just wondering… am I the only one not thinking so one-sided? (Yes I am a man so I might be bias…)

Please keep your heads straight, lets find out the whole story first.

I really doubt that any story is gonna make it okay that this guy killed his wife and kids. His children didn’t die quickly, by the way – they died slowly and painfully.

I’m not buying that there was another man in the house at 7 or 8 PM on a Friday night when Michel was expected home. He’d talked to his mom and brother at 6:30 and was not home yet, but was headed there. Nadya would have to be pretty stupid to have a man in the house with her kids at that time of evening.

Now, if she was having an affair, I can see him getting mad at her and even killing her accidentally during an altercation. Not okay, but i can sort of see it happening. But there’s nothing those kids could ever have done to make it reasonable for him to leave them in a burning house.

Hmmm. Wife dead of blunt force trauma and stabbing, children dead of injuries received in a fire, he’s the only person that gets out and he gets out through a window a full floor below where three of his kids were still alive, but dying?

Yeah, you’re right. Must have been the leprechauns.

Umm it’s called speculation. No one is on his jury here so calm down.

Why refer to the the witch trials where multitudes of innocent people were murdered by various forms of torture. This is one man, who appears to have murdered his family. Just an opinion but bad reference!

Ok new story… Man has mistress, wife found out, wife confronted man when he got home, man and wife got into argument, wife cry, being emotional, threaten man, and said “I want nothing to do with you and I don’t want your kids.” Wife set fire on the house. You guess the rest.

Again, nobody knew who killed who at this moment. Maybe he did, and if so I will be the first one to agree his kids deserve to live. Either case this is a sad story. But I’ve said enough… have better thing to do in my life. At least I am confident that I am a wimp and I don’t have the gut to kill anyone… so if someone found me stabbed (and live), I won’t be charged with murder…

The man was charged with murdering his family. That is what we are discussing. If you would rather no one talk about this incident until after the trail, go fuck yourself and find another site that is willing to oblige. Besides, there is no such thing as being proven innocent, moron. Just guilty and not guilty. Being found not guilty is nowhere close to meaning the person is innocent. But you are right, arguing with idiots does drag you to their level…but occasionally I like to step down to look people like you in the eye.

Again, nobody knew who killed who at this moment. Maybe he did, and if so I will be the first one to agree his kids deserve to live.

Under what circumstances would these kids not deserve to live?

Actually, we do know who killed who, and here’s why:

    1. Nadya died of blunt force trauma and stabbing – primarily stabbing. However, the stab wounds were not immediately obvious, because they occurred before she was burned.

    2. If Nadya started the fire, why did Michel Veillette not call 911? His knife wounds were superficial, to the arms. Most of his injuries occurred during the jump from the window.

    3. There was enough evidence at the scene to charge Michel Veillette with aggravated arson and murder within twelve hours of the event.

    4. The children were found in their 3rd floor bedrooms. The fire started on the third or second floor, either right near the children or under them. Nadya Veillette was found dead in a third floor bedroom, but Michel Veillette jumped out the second story window, meaning that in order to get to that area he would have passed his children, who he made no attempt to rescue. He was on the third floor during the altercation, as Nadya was dead there and he had defensive knife wounds on his arms, indicating his presence at the altercation that killed his wife.

I suppose it’s barely possible that Nadya beat herself to death, stabbed herself and started the fire and that Michel didn’t feel the need to rescue his kids or call 911, but that still makes him guilty of failing to get help for his children. Or maybe there was an intruder who, with no apparent motive, tore up this family and let Michel out alone so he could jump out the window, then escaped the flames himself with no damage and leaving no evidence.

I think Occam’s Razor’s gonna be borne out on this one.

Maybe our wise Makkuro, who went off to lunch and hasn’t posted since, choked to death on a sandwich during his lunch. Or maybe someone in the kitchen kept their hand in the sandwich while it was being served and then leapt their hand out and shoved it down his throat until he suffocated. Or maybe the waitress pretended that she was wiping the table, but held the washcloth over his mouth and nose until he died.

And maybe this father didn’t kill his wife and children and then try to pretend that was just an innocent victim leaping out of a window. And, probably, unfortunately, we will have to read more philosophy and pseudo-wisdom from Makkuro sometime in the future.

Update: Michel Veillette says that he and his wife were arguing about finances and his girlfriend the night of the murders. He says that his wife Nadya went after him with a frying pan, after which he retaliated by stabbing her. But he swears that she had already set the house on fire by then. Riiight. Which of course explains why he didn’t even attempt to get his kids out of there. Yeah, i’m buying that. Not.

Wow, way to inject your opinion on almost all the facts thereby biasing it. Even the news, which is biased, isn’t half as biased as this. I know Michel. He wasn’t a looker, but the guy worked hard and loved his kids. If he did any of those things, which I am not rushing to judge because I know better, it wasn’t because he planned it.

I don’t doubt he stabbed his wife and hit her with the frying pan. I do doubt he started it. His story claims that she attacked him and he managed to take the weapons away and used them against her to stop her from attacking him more. I believe that.

He may have started the fire, but I doubt he did it with the intentions of killing his children. Someone who gets attacked with a frying pan and a knife probably doesn’t come out without getting slashed a few times and hit at least once in the head with the frying pan. Getting hit in the head with a frying pan is likely to knock something lose. Adrenaline to stop your attacker can affect your thought processes. Shock from an attack can cause you to stop thinking clearly.

Words have to have been exchanged and likely if he started the fire it was for one of two reasons. 1. An attempt to stop his wife from leaving the room as he didn’t realize she was dead. 2. Because words about the house were exchanged and he didn’t think she should get it anymore. Knowing him as I did, I know he never would have come to either of those conclusions if he was thinking straight. I could also see her starting the fire to keep him from leaving. The coroners report gives evidence that she did not which I don’t like but have a hard time not believing.

My guess is that after getting things knocked around a little and being high on adrenaline, he started the fire. As he stood and watched it begin to encompass the hallway(I’ve read it was started in the hallway), he began to calm down and think things through again. Then he remembered the kids. Unfortunately I’d like to think I’d run through a fire for my children but I have never been in that situation. The heat of the fire stopped him in his tracks and as a last resort, he dove out a window.

No reports say how he was found. Maybe he was unconscious on the ground where he landed. Maybe he dragged himself to the neighbors house and got them to call 911. Maybe he sat by the side of the road suffering from shock. Who are we to know? Who are we to judge?

Wow, way to assume we’re a legitimate news source and not a blog.
I saw the layout of that house. According to police sources, he was able to walk across the third floor, past his children, down the stairs and jump out of the second story window to save himself, but he wasn’t able to call 911 or get his kids out of their beds? Your argument that he didn’t intend for his children to die is flimsy at best in the face of the evidence. (And there is no evidence that he asked anyone else to call 911 either, so put the fantasy away.)

And because you think Nadya might have hit him first, all the other stuff he did was okay? Get a grip, dude, seriously. His children are dead because this guy couldn’t control his temper, and you’re here defending HIM? How about defending his children’s right to be here? Or his wife’s?

Wow. If adrenaline has this kind of effect, it should be illegal.

You’re jumping around in your thinking like you’re a little high on adrenaline yourself. Calm down. Lots of people are dead. Mostly little people who had their whole life ahead of them. What idiot sets fire to a house to keep someone inside a room? Murderers set fire to the house to hide their having bludgeoned a person to death and in order to get rid of a batch of children whose expense was going to cramp his style with new girly friend.

I knew this guy had a girfriend on the side!

Notice how I said ‘Even the news…’ That basically says that I recognize you aren’t a legitimate news source. But the problem I have is the fact that you judge this man without knowing him. Who are you to judge? I am definitely not saying what he did was right. What I am saying is that I was not there and I cannot assume anything and I don’t like you doing it.

By the way, I could not find a layout of his house, could you post your source, I’d be interested in seeing it. My wife told me she read that his wife was found on the second floor in the master bedroom. 3 of his 4 children were also found on the second floor and his fourth was found on the third floor. I of course cannot find the article she read this in so I’d be interested in seeing your source. The fire was supposedly started on the second floor in the hallway leading to the rooms.
This says he was found on the lawn, no indication of what mental condition he was in. It also says 3 of the children were found still alive which to me means the fire was not burning long.(You said as much about the children in your original post)

This states that the children were not drugged and they were in their bedrooms sleeping. It also states that it is unlikely they suffered any pain when they died, a true boon with such a tragedy.

This one says he jumped out his bedroom window and also that the fire was set to the second floor hallway around the master bedroom. It also says he got hit in the head with the frying pan during the fight.

This PDF shows some information and says that Nadya and the four children were found in their bedrooms but doesn’t give enough detail to show where their bedrooms are. From the PDF, it looks like they are all right above the garage which seems silly to me especially with the broken window on the other side of the house and his testimony that it was the master bedroom window he dove out.

None of the two dozen or so articles that I just read says where each child was relative to the floor nor do any show the layout of the house in any detail. Its not that I don’t believe you, its that I want your claims to be backed up by evidence, not by opinion. There is plenty of evidence calling the wife the attacker but you blame this all on him by saying he beat and then stabbed his wife and set the rest of his family on fire seemingly for money or sex purposes which is not backed up by anything but your opinion.

In all this, I think the death of his wife was necessary for his own survival which is called self defense. The death of his children was a totally unnecessary tragedy but knowing how much he cared for them, it might truly be a temporary insanity issue. I think he deserves to be punished for any crimes he did commit but I will not judge him as not one of us knows all of the facts. The courts will hopefully met out the proper punishment.

If you knew him and spent years working directly with him as I did, I would hope you wouldn’t be so quick to draw your own conclusions. Truthfully I would hope you wouldn’t be so quick to draw your own conclusions at all, with or without knowing him.

Seriously, Zanix, I appreciate your viewpoint, I really do, but where were you a month ago when this was going down? I had the source at that time. I’ll look again when I have a minute and see if I can get the layout out of some news reports’ archival ass, but honestly, man, nothing I say is going to change your mind. You’re just here to lambast me for not kissing the ass of a man you thought you knew.

It doesn’t matter how long the fire burned – all of his children died. All of them. One in the home, three the same night in the hospital. They’re dead and it’s his fault. What part of that seems unclear to you? Why are you just now Googling to find stuff on this guy? We’ve posted 127 stories since this happened last month. If you wanted me to pull sources, about 100 stories ago would have been a better time.

I hope you’re right, I do. I hope he didn’t mean to do this. All my information was taken from news sources that were in the public domain at the time I wrote the article, so there’s no libel here. Speculation is only that. You’re maligning his wife the same way you think I’m maligning your friend. The only difference is that she’s dead and can’t defend herself, and he’ll get a trial. Nadya and her children never got one.

The reason I’m just starting to get into this is because I just got a call from another guy I worked with yesterday telling me about this. I don’t watch typical news, I read BBC News on the internet because it tends to be less biased but the downside is that I get less U.S. news, and I live several states away so I hadn’t even heard a peep about it till now. I have since done as much digging as I can and I can’t find very much information anywhere. Since it’s been a month, I find it hard to believe that they had more concrete evidence earlier and it no longer exists unless the evidence was flawed.

To a certain extent, you are right about my reaction to his wife. I never knew her. We never talked about her. But we did talk about his kids. He adored his children. I remember him leaving the jobsite when his twins were born but he was so good at what he does that he couldn’t be gone for more than a few days before we needed him again.

I just have a problem when I go to all these stories just now and all these people are ready to toss him to the wolves and the last that was posted was half a month ago on any of them. If I could, I’d want to hear his version of the story from his mouth. With everyone taking Nadya’s side when she was the one who started the physically violent part of this, I guess I am trying to make sure people see that there can be two sides to this. I can’t do anything else to help him.

Oh and one last thing. The kids are definitely the ones who suffered in all this. If he is convicted, then he deserves to do his time. I just don’t think the death penalty is the right course of action.

How do you know she started it? Reports have said that Michel Veillette did say that, yes. But he had only a few superficial cuts – she was stabbed fatally and beaten. So even if she “started” it, he sure as hell finished it. Chances are she was near dead before the fire even started.

I’m sorry for your loss, but if you don’t talk to Michel more than once a month to even know this had happened, it’s not that huge a loss, y’know? And it’s pretty apparent that you didn’t know him any better than anyone else did.
