Christa Chidester Vacates Residence
January 10, 2008 by Morbid

WEDDINGTON, NC - Christa Chidester,34, was going through a divorce with her husband, Mark Chidester, 52. She also suffered from fibromyalgia, severe back pain and depression. She had gotten a court order which stated “Wife and her daughter shall vacate the former marital residence no later than FridayFriday reviews
, January 4, 2008, at 5 p.m.†Chidester did just that, but she left her and her 9-year-old daughter’s bodies behind. She suffocated Sarah Higgins in her bed, then apparently hung herself in the attic. She left a note detailing what she had done and what to do with her personal affairs.
Det. Kevin Rogers, the lead investigator in the case, said:
“She didn’t feel that she could continue on and did not want her daughter to have to bear that burden alone,†he said. “She didn’t want her daughter to be without her, without a mother at such a young age, and she was sparing her of that pain – that was the way she kind of put it.â€
Police went to the house initially after Mr. Chider saw that his ex-wifes car had not moved over a period of days. Sarah Higgins was not his biological daughter and Christa Chidester was still receiving child support from the girl’s father. Court records show that Mark Chidester is a vice president at Family Dollar in Matthews earning about $138,000 a year, and that Christa was unemployed but had a previous job in Florida earning $50,000. Mark Chidester was convicted in Union County District Court of assault on a female involving his wife in February 2006.

She did not want her daughter to be in pain of the loss of her, so she killed her, WTF
I hate fucking people who always have to take others with them when that kill themselves.
2:00 pm on January 10th, 2008
Yeah, because I am sure that was alot more painful than to wake up fighting for breath, only to realize that your mother, the only person you had in this world and who YOU loved unconditionally, was murdering you.
2:04 pm on January 10th, 2008
It’s eerie how similar mother and daughter look. My daughter and I resemble each other tremendously also, but those two have a remarkable resemblance.
2:45 pm on January 10th, 2008
I’m sorry this women was in such pain. But what a selfish bitch to take her daughter with her. I hope the same afflictions that she suffered with here are continuing else where!
2:49 pm on January 10th, 2008
They even have the same head tilt… that is hard to look at.
What a sad story…I don’t even know what to say.
2:53 pm on January 10th, 2008
so so sad…. why did she have to vacate the home? am i the only one who finds it strange?
her hubby was arrested in past for assaulting her, he makes over 100k, she is ill and unemployed with a child… bizarre, no?
3:02 pm on January 10th, 2008
Part of the court order was that the home be divided. The only way to do that is to sell it and split the profit between the parties. It sounds to me like she and her daughter were the only ones living there and the order to vacate was for the purposes of putting the home up for sale.

What circumstance warrant a murder suicide…None! Life is hard, I have had my issues felt a lil depressed, felt like damn life’s not worth living. I’m not into telling all my biz, but I’ve had my share of shit, not once did I think of killing my children.
I’m sorry her life was in such a disarray but the innocent life she took does not make me feel any sympathy for her.
3:17 pm on January 10th, 2008
The husband has a past history of violence???? Are the polivce positive that this wasn’t a murder staged to look like a suicide?????
4:25 pm on January 10th, 2008
Solange, I agree with you, this is weird. Are they really sure that he didnt murder them? is there an alibi for him? Also, if her car was there over a period of days and he wanted her out why didnt he knock on the door to find out what was going on? It seems weird that a man with a history of spousal abuse would not knock the door down if he wanted her to leave. Maybe he learned from his past mistakes??

This shows a little insight into the whole “doesn’t want her to deal with the pain of losing a mother” theory:
One thing that sickened me as well was a quote from a psychiatrist, saying that suffocating a child that age is “not an easy thing to do” physically. The mother must have put forth a lot of force and effort to do this to her daughter, who was probably kicking and screaming.
6:57 pm on January 10th, 2008
Hmmm I’m pretty speechless with this one. Wow, what a tragic event.
9:31 pm on January 10th, 2008
I am with you Hippie…speechless. I don’t know if I can go to that very dark corner in my mother mind….
I wonder if with her multiple conditions that can cause intense pain, if she wasn’t over doing the pain meds….
Truly tragic.
9:58 pm on January 10th, 2008
Well if that’s the case the hubby murdering them seems plausible. If that’s the case real nice of him to relive the mother of her pain and kill the child for shits and giggles. So sad:(
11:50 pm on January 10th, 2008
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of constant pain in muscles and tendons. It can vary in intensity. The more run down or tense a person gets, the more pain is one situation that can happen. It can even cause muscle cramps like lumps in the tissue. Severe back pain — I’ve been there — it takes over one’s life. Depression is a logical result of the other two. Depression might make a mother think she’s doing her child a favor by suffocating her. I don’t see it myself, but then I’m not depressed. I hope she at least drugged the poor girl with some cough syrup or something so that she wasn’t conscious that it was her mother who was killing her.

Christa was a strong and determined person who loved her daughter immensely. What happened to her daughter and to her is beyond tragic. One can be suspicious of the facts or narrow-minded in their assumptions, but the bottom line is that none of us (no matter what any of us have personally been through) can and should judge the incident or the persons involved. For those of us who believe in God, let us leave that to him; and for those of us that do not believe in God, let us leave it to the proper authorities to handle the investigation. Just remember that the Medical Examiner can only determine the cause of death, the investigators we have authorized will determine what probably happened. In the time that I knew Christa, I have only good things to say and if all the speculation is found true, then I pray to God to forgive her and take them both into Heaven where there is no more pain.

DBP so sorry for your loss – May peace be with you.
4:27 am on January 11th, 2008
Thank you “Wonder” for your heartfelt sentiment, I will extend this to all who knew her.
In reference to the previous comments:
1. Vacating the home as they needed to sell it to split it ==>I am sorry, but thousands of homes are sold all the time while still being occupied. This theory does not fly with me at all!
2. Suffocating Sarah ==> Physically this would be difficult for a child of this age and Christa was a petite person herself. It would seem more logical that Sarah was in some way deeply sleeping for whatever reason. There was never a statement made of any signs of struggle.
3. Foul Play by Mark (current ex-husband) ==> I myself find it unusual for the front door to be found “open”. In one report it is stated that a court representative found the door like this and another report said that the husband found it this way, and yet another report said that the police found it that way with no mention of anyone else finding it that way first. Curious indeed, but Mark supposedly “won” the house so why would he?
4. Meds overdose ==> Seriously, how can an overdosed petite woman be able to be coherent and/or coordinated enough to do all that is claimed that she did? And if she was overdosed… it makes you wonder even more about foul play!
5. Foul language ==> There is no need for it just to express your opinion.
6. Motherless ==> Christa grew up in her crucial teenage years without a Mother but being old enough to remember one. I may not agree or comprehend an extreme act as she is being accused of, but I can certainly understand if she was as depressed as stated and in severe pain physically and emotionally, why she would have incorrectly thought that little Sarah would have been better off. I am not condoning or confirming, just understanding.
No matter what, this is still all very sad!
7:08 am on January 11th, 2008
Thanks DBP, for sharing what you know with us. Please, if you find anything else out, let us know.
7:26 am on January 11th, 2008
Thank you, DBP, for your comments and insights. This is a very sad story, especially because the alteration of a few circumstances or the passage of a few days might have led to a happier concludsion.
But please don’t tell me what kind of language to use. I haven’t used any foul language in this thread, but I will use it when I see it to be an assist to expressing my opinion.

This is not a theory. There is no other logical reason why a court would order her out of the house. Unfortunately, he was represented by an expensive legal team (James, McElroy & Diehl). She was not. District Judge Hunt Gwyn signed the order as part of a division of property agreement.
I agree. More than likely, the daughter had been drugged, evn if it was by OTC type substance. If the daughter was on, or placed on her stomach, a person with little girth would have no issues stopping her breathing. Which is probably exactly what happened.
This was pretty clear to me. He drove by to see if his ex-wife was still in the house on one day, and noticed she was. He drove by a few days later, a day in which she should have been gone, and he saw she was still there. He did not notify authorities out of fear or worry, he notified them so they would kick her out of the house. This man had no need to kill this woman, he did that in court.
The fact that the door was open (which is not specified to what degree…an inch, open wide) makes perfect sense, especially since she had left a note that detailed what to do with her personal affairs. She was being accommodating and precise. An open door meant that police had a right to come in and find them, rather than having to break in. If I were to do what she had done, I would have done the same thing. Well, actually, I would have probably locked it so that I stunk up the house a bit. My last stab at my ex…make the house even harder to sell.
You are right, it is not needed. But in a lot of cases, these stories illicit anger, shock, bewilderment…people use shocking language to express that. “Holy fuck! that was one crazy story!” Does a lot better to reflect a reader’s shock than “By Golly! that was one crazy story!” Foul, coarse, crass language is not frowned upon here, so if you do plan on sticking around, you may want to get used to it, or just skip over it.
If you were just pointing out some type of fact, well…um, thanks, Mom?
8:59 am on January 11th, 2008
Hell, I know that, but I like to use it. Feels good rolling off my fingers onto the screen. Ya see one of the reasons I come here is to vent. These stories are crazy, humans are insane, and cussing seems to be a good way to vent anger. So please stay around because we are a grand bunch of folks, but know this, some of us cuss because, as I said, it is good to fucking vent.

Hello DBP,
Your connection to this case is apparent and I am very sorry for your loss. I wanted to touch on part of your post.
I hope that you did not think I was making that assumption based on my statement:
I never meant to indicate that I thought overdose was involved here. I know, for a fact, that when dealing with intense pain it can be fairly easy to take more pain meds than necessary. Doing so can definitely bring on depression which can lead to thoughts of suicide and/or filicide. Those thoughts can be extremely frightening. That’s all I will say about that.
I am one that really feels bad for Christa. I know that this is not what she wanted to do. She obviously felt that she had no way out. My thought was an attempt to figure out how she came to that place.
I agree, I hope God will bring them both to a better place.
11:00 am on January 11th, 2008
Welcome DBP and mostly, sorry for your loss. The dad involved here is a jerk – who throws there own kid out of a home?
I know of this guy, who got strung out really bad on meth. He lost his marriage, among many things. The home that he and his wife shared, was given to him by his father. Her name was not on the deed, as he got it before they were married. He gave her the home – so his daughter would have a home. He moved out and found somewhere else to live. He told my brother, “…..you think I’m gonna put my kid out with no where to go?”
I feel he did the right thing by putting his child’s living arrangements before his own. Gosh, I didn’t realize what I just wrote – we need to mark that on the calender — meth dad thinks of someone other than himself.
11:12 am on January 11th, 2008
Hey Pooh,
Sarah was not his biological child. She was from Christa’s previous marriage.
Still, he was a shit in the manner in which he treated both of them. If he had any kind of a heart he would have tried to help them get settled somewhere else before trying to sell the house. I guess he forgot that “what goes around, comes around”. Asshole.
11:25 am on January 11th, 2008
Thanks colomom – I should have read closer. But, still to put any child in a homeless state is pretty shitty.
Hell, I have never laid eyes on you and I wouldn’t throw your kid out with no where to go. He made enough money to where he could have held out on the sell or he could have loaned her the first month’s rent if he wanted her out that bad.
Believe me, I’ve got some sorry neighbors. I would be happy to provide gas money and my truck to haul their sorry asses somewhere else. No, I don’t like them and would be willing to pay to be rid of them. I wish he would have felt that way.
I just don’t understand evicting the child – no matter who the parent was. As a basic human, he should have been thinking about the child. And one last thing, if the girl was from a previous marriage, could the mom have not let the dad come and get the girl until she got settled? It seems there was time enough to make arrangements for the bio dad to come for the child. I don’t know maybe the bio dad was abusive or had passed on. Just thinking out loud.
11:52 am on January 11th, 2008
It certainly looks like Mark did not give two shits about his former step-daughter. We dont know all the facts yet, but it is beginning to look that way to me.. I really feel like Christa had serious mental issues. It is evil to kill your own daughter, but I can’t help feeling sorry for her as well.
12:01 pm on January 11th, 2008
Bio dad was paying child support which, according to the media, was one of the reasons why the husband was awarded the house.
12:10 pm on January 11th, 2008
Since when would child support pay for a home and unless he was an actor or muscian, it probably wouldn’t pay rent. He had a 6 figure income and the courts compared that to child support. Just how much child support was being paid for one child? The court failed again.
12:18 pm on January 11th, 2008
exactly where did you read that? The article I read stated the house was ordered to be divided by the court.
12:27 pm on January 11th, 2008
That is the way I read it, too. I just thought I had misunderstood.
12:30 pm on January 11th, 2008
My sympathies to all involved.
However, SHE MURDERED her daughter, explain that at the pearly gates.
3:27 pm on January 11th, 2008
Sorry, it was I who misinterpreted the end of this article: http://www.wcnc.com/news/topstories/stories/wcnc-010908-krg-bodiesfound.76dca99.html. Another article did say that the property was to be split.

I know what happend is wrong, but I would like to take a moment to reflect on the great Christa and Sarah. I knew Christa and Sarah a while back. I became close to them but didn’t talk asmuch after they moved from Fl. I just can’t beleive this has happened!! One would never have thought after meeting Christa and Sarah that Christa would have done this. She was one of those special moms, who had a great relationship with her daughter. Sarah was her world. Christa was a great friend, person and most of all mom. She had a smile that would light up a room and was always very appreciative. She had a great quality of giving notice to those that did something good. I admired her for that. She would always go places and spend quality time with Sarah. I remeber their favorite Tai resteraunt
Sarah used to love the flowers that would come with the food. Sarah was an awesome child!! She was always happy and loved life. I remeber always thinking about how smart she was. All this is very sad, and at this time I please ask for everyone to stop judging for a moment and pray. Pray for their eternal life and for their close friends strength. Pray for Sarah’s dad and forgiveness. To all who else knew them, I am sorry for their loss and your confussion, disbelief and sorrow are shared. To Christa and Sarah I pray God carries you.

I am sickened. Sounds like she did love her, not just more than herself.
Peace Baby!
1:58 am on January 13th, 2008
Let us not make it worse for the families involved or to the memories of them and “Amen” to MRAE’s comment. Enough “bad” has happened and been said about this tragedy.
3:44 am on January 13th, 2008
Thanks for that insight Mrae. I hope that all of us reading this post can take a moment and look around us, and ask “is there anyone who is suffering that needs my help?” Maybe it wouldn’t have stopped Christa from doing what she did, but it makes you wonder, did anyone even try? Did her soon to be ex-husband? Did her estranged father? Her estranged sisters? Her daughter’s father? Was there anyone there who might have gotten this woman the help she needed?
2:52 pm on January 13th, 2008
For Everyones info, not that you need to know. Christa did love her daughter and she was feeling like she had no way out . Knowing Christa when she was young her daughter is like a exact copy of her she looked just like her mom. She was not without family though. She did in the past cut off a relationship with her family and sisters but had been spending time with her sisters and father. Her father will be making a statement after his grandaughter has been buried. I wish people would give christas and sarahs family time to grieve without making assumptions. Christas mother died of a disease she needed a kidney and there was no doners and the girls watch there mother die everyday. Taking care of her and themselves knowing there was no help for her. They were just kids themselves. Yes mark was a jerk as he could have done something to make it easier for christa and sarah. Yes no one in the family had no idea christa would ever do what she did. They knew she was packing and supposed to be moving back to florida with family. As family members spoke with her often during this week and had no clue. I dont know where christa is now but I hope that she will be forgiven of what she has done. But I do know that the familes are still here and are dealing with the loss of both sarah and christa. This was a very selfish thing that christa did and I pray that everyone involved can forgive her. I pray that sarahs family can move on and remember sarah for the time they had with her. I know that sarah is with Jesus now.
3:00 pm on January 13th, 2008
Kind of a shitty way to get her into his loving, compassionate arms. Too bad Jesus couldn’t have just thrown them a bone and gotten Christa a good set of attorney’s for her divorce.

I think I can see what this mother was thinking in the midst of her understandable depression. She saw her daughter, small and vulnerable, and was afraid to leave the child on her own without a mother’s protection. She probably romanticized that death would be a brief passage and then she and her daughter would be safe together forever. Of course, I think what the mother did was murder. But as I have read these posts, it’s slowly grown in my mind how a very depressed and physically ill parent could be deluded into thinking that death is a justifiable option for their beloved child as for her/himself. But again, it was murder. And I grieve for the family’s pain and the life that the little girl was never given a chance to live.

Wow, wrybread….nice.

Mark Chidester is a snake, maybe some one should check out his first ex-wife and the HELL that he put her through. He thinks that he is this wonderful “family” guy and tries to get everyone else to think that but the truth is he is a SNAKE! All of us who knew him at Eckerd know what a lying piece of dog crap he is. I can’t beleive that he has been able to hold a job in HR for as long as he has. Watch out women…don’t be tricked by his smooth ways, he has a list of victims a mile long and they know the truth about him. I pray that Christa and Sarah will be blessed in heaven and I can not wait until Mark has to answer to our Heavenly Father for his actions.
1:32 am on January 16th, 2008
Well said, Wry.
5:11 am on January 16th, 2008
I KNEW MARK that gives me the creeps my ex is a snake. been divorced near 15 years I am surprized that he hadn’t committed some type of foul play. I was always looking over my shoulder he is a revengful person and it usually waits long enough that he isn’t the suspect. I hope that if mark had something to do with this he won’t get away with it like Drew Peterson has.
6:44 pm on January 21st, 2008
perhaps people should take a deep breath before they pass judgement on Christa. i knew Christa very well, in fact we were engaged and lived together in florida. i know how troubled she was by her mothers slow painful death and the eventual disintegration of her family. i knew her to be the sweetest person i ever met, and she truly loved children. for her to have done this (if she really did, be sure to check the husband) is just a reminder how much pain people carry around with them every day. if she did do this, i am just sad for her and her daughter and the families that she could not reach out to someone in her time of need. she was a very strong willed person and taught me much in life even though i was older than her. i cant even start to feel the pain the loveland and higgins families are feeling, but know that my prayers are with you, and i will pray for Christa’s soul.
6:44 pm on October 13th, 2008
What it clearly looks like to me is a case of a loving mother who just snapped under the pressure. She was over her head. She was up against lawyers who were out to destroy her. They succeeded, unfortunately she did herself in.
