Camp Lejeune — Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach 20, was reported missing by her mother on Dec. 19, five days after the two last spoke. She is also 81/2 months pregnant. Her car was found Monday night at a bus station near base and investigators said it hadn’t been there long. Her cell phone was on N.C. Highway 24. Suspicious activity has been flagged in Lauterbach’s bank accounts since her disappearance.

Interesting to not is the fact that she was due to testify in a criminal case after being the victim of an on-base crime, but no one is elaborating. They are also not giving much details on the possible father of the baby. She lived in the Midway Park housing area, which isn’t on base but is reserved for Marines. Deputies have searched the home and questioned some roommates. Investigators are still waiting to talk with at least one male roommate who might be deployed and he could be considered a person of interest.

Until you can interview him and eliminate him, you still consider them as key people of concern,” Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said.

Lauterbach’s mother came to Onslow County last weekend from the family’s home in Montgomery, Ohio, to provide whatever assistance she could in the investigation. Friends and relatives also set up a Facebook.com page to help find the missing Marine, who they said would never go anywhere without letting someone know. I don’t have a FacebookFacebookFacebook account, so if anyone has a link to it, post it please.

Edit:

Thanks black heart! Facebook link is in story.

Shouldn't he be charged with two counts of murder?  The baby was just weeks away from being born... it counts as a human being, too.  I read he also killed the infant and the baby's body was found next to the mother.

I hate this.... Thanks for the update.

RALEIGH, N.C.: Federal officials say a Marine charged with killing a pregnant colleague in North Carolina has been extradited to the U.S. after fleeing to Mexico.
FBI spokeswoman Amy Thoreson said 22-year-old Cpl. Cesar Laurean arrived in the U.S. today to face murder charges in the death of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach of Vandalia, Ohio.
Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said he expected Laurean to arrive at the local jail tonight. He said Laurean's first court appearance would be Monday.
Defense attorney Dick McNeil said he hasn't been contracted by federal officials.
Laurean was charged with first-degree murder in January 2008, after Lauterbach's charred remains were found buried in his backyard in Jacksonville. She had been eight months pregnant.
The two worked together at nearby Camp Lejeune.

Well, we all know she was :f" two ways left of thursday.Hello MARINE!

I bet life was unbearable for her on the base, after telling on a superior officer. Superior officers have the ability to have someone severely harassed without ever getting their hands dirty.

Just a point of reference here.

The guy is/was a corporal. E4 non commissioned officer. A grunt, not a "superior officer" to anyone.
She was one pay grade below him for reference.

    Enlisted range from E1-E9.

FBI Arrests Suspect in Slaying of Marine

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The FBI says it has taken a North Carolina-based Marine wanted in the brutal murder of a pregnant colleague into custody in Mexico. The FBI office in Charlotte said Thursday night that special agents and Mexican authorities have arrested Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean.

Laurean is charged with murder in the slaying of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach (LOW-ter-bahk).

The FBI says Laurean is awaiting extradition back to the U.S.

He's been seen in Mexico by family and the Mexican government has issued a warrant for his arrest.

    http://home.peoplepc.com/psp/newsstory.asp?cat=...

"A cousin told reporters last week that Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean visited family in the area of Guadalajara, Mexico, this month, but left without saying where he was headed."

sounds like a pile of crap all the way around. I think they should haul his ass back up here and prosecute him anyway even if they cannot go for the death penalty. Life would be fine, but I think even after the state gets done with him the military could try him too. Then after he got out of the prison he could go to leavenworth and die. Works for me. What I want to know is how he got out of going to the unit Christmas party. My nephew is in the Army and it was MANDATORY that they both attended the unit party. So how is it that he could skip out while she went. Yep, I think she was knee deep in it and went to give herself an alibi for later. Betcha they will both be sipping margaritas on some mexican beach somewhere very soon.
  • mo.armymom
Well you can kiss the death sentence goodbye on this one.
  • Well the POS made it to Mexico after all, where I’m sure he’s thanking wifey for the head start.

Yeah, I am sure she is wheeling and dealing with prosecutors right now. I guess everyone saw the reports in which she was seen helping paint the garage? Or that she had gotten into an argument with Maria earlier?

do you think the friend with him should be charged of a crime ?

no word on her funeral as of yet ?

I'm inclined to think it was her idea. I mean really, what reason would she have to go to HIS unit's christmas party alone unless she knew something sinister was going down at home.
  • Kebaj
Well they said on CNN this morning that the wife will more then likely not be charged cause the bastard told her what he did and she is bound to not have to disclose what was said cause they were married. Kinda like when someone goes and see's a psych...and they confess to killin someone the psych doesn't have a duty to notify the police...or is that a priest...well either way she more then likely won't have to testify against him and I really think that is BS....I never thought for a moment that she didn't know what her husband had done...I mean did you see that back yard....that big mound of dirt *shakes head* I hope someone find's him and "accidently" beat's his ass before they turn him in for justice...
  • Hippiepoet
Anyone else find it outta whack that the christmas party wifey was attending without her murdering husband was HIS, not hers? Watch, they won’t arrest the bitch and she’ll run off to Mexico and join him.

I think the wife knows a lot more shit, and she is covering up for him. Her heading to Mexico, wouldn't surprise me in the least.
  • ashdavus
wifey was at a christmas party while Cesar was killing her…..

If an American murderer makes it to Mexico, Mexico won't allow extradition unless there is a pledge to not seek the death penalty. So if this bastard made it there, he's safe from being executed for murdering this woman and the baby. So make a mental note that if you ever murder anyone, hie thyself to the Mexican border.

Affidavits attached to warrants obtained by Nine On Your Side this morning show that Cesar Laurean’s wife knew about the death of Maria Lauterbach at least a day before she reported it to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

I had a feeling. Bitch, hope he was worth going to jail for! Stand by your man.... even if he rapes another woman, gets her pregnant, and kills her!

Affidavits attached to warrants obtained by Nine On Your Side this morning show that Cesar Laurean’s wife knew about the death of Maria Lauterbach at least a day before she reported it to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

The affidavits attached to the warrants show that on January 10th, the day before Christina went to law enforcement about Lauterbach’s death, she went with Cesar Laurean to visit one of his civilian attorneys.

On the way to the attorney, Cesar told her that Maria Lauterbach visited their home on December 15th. Cesar Laurean claimed that Maria told him that she had a plan to leave the area and demanded money from him. Cesar also told his wife that he went to the bus station and helped Lauterbach purchase a ticket.

According to the claim in the affidavits attached to the warrants, Lauterbach went back to Laurean’s residence that night and began arguing with Cesar.

Cesar claimed Lauterbach slit her own throat, but Onslow County Sheriff’s deputies say they don’t believe that’s the case.

Cesar Laurean goes on to claim that he buried her body in a wooded area adjacent to his house.

The affidavits attached to the warrants go on to say that Laurean had obtained legal counsel and explained the facts to his lawyers.

They told him that he could be facing the death penalty.

Laurean was last seen at around 4AM on January 11th. That same day, Christina Laurean turned over a note to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office that detailed Cesar’s claims about how Lauterbach died.

i think it is pretty disgusting that he had a bonfire with ppl over and they did not know that she was buried in the yard. also, that the people living around him did not see or hear anything. Wife definitly should have know something was going on, unless she was gone from the house for a week or so.
  • pms.247
I agree, Ash, and I'm pretty sure they are keeping their eye on her, whether she knows it or not.
  • ashdavus
Ya know...I just have to speak up here. There is NO WAY that his wife was in the dark on this. Even if he was able to murder someone in their home, dispose of the body and clean up the visible mess while she was out for the day, there would still be a rotten fucking smell in the house when she came home. My BIL once got a bloody nose on their carpet. Didn't lose but a couple spoonfuls of blood in the carpet and my sister had cleaned it up but it fucking reeked like something had died in her living room.

Plus, if she found the note at 4am, then why did she wait 4 hours to call the cops? Because she knew he had just left and was giving him a head start.

Something stinks with the wife and the feds need to watch her.

CNN.com is reporting that the chicken-shit may have already made it to his native Mexico:

JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) -- The FBI suspects that Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean, sought in the slaying of a pregnant fellow Marine, has fled to his native Mexico, an FBI spokeswoman said Wednesday.
A pickup found at a hotel in North Carolina was identified as belonging to suspect Cesar Armando Laurean.

"At this point in time we strongly suspect but have not confirmed that Laurean fled to Mexico," said Newsom Summerlin, FBI media representative in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Laurean, 21, is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, and a naturalized citizen who lived in the Las Vegas area before joining the Marines.

Thanks MG, for all that info. I'm going to go read the links
  • Becca
From articles on both Fox News and ABC:

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that remains found over the weekend in a fire pit in Laurean's yard were those of Lauterbach and her child. Dr. Charles Garrett, the Onslow County medical examiner, said Lauterbach, who was eight months pregnant when she vanished, died of "traumatic head injury due to blunt force trauma."

The autopsy did not answer all the questions about the circumstances of Lauterbach's death, said county prosecutor Dewey Hudson. Detectives are still unsure whether she gave birth before her death and of the identity of the father, he said.
  • Becca
I thought they had originally stated, the baby was still in her womb. Do you have a link or remember where you heard that news?

Hmm, I'll try to find the link bcs I know I read it somewhere yesterday
  • thepooh5
I’m in NC also and I agree with you; based on our lack of a fetal law, let the feds get him on that one. Last I heard the Chapel Hill ME’s office was trying to determine whether the child had been born and then died; if that’s the case then they can charge POS with murdering him.

Surely they will charge him for killing his child. I’m here in NC and if NC can’t get the job done, move over and let the feds charge him with murdering his child.

okay, one more post and i am done :)
Here is where I read about the fetal homicide laws (or lack thereof) in NC

    http://www.wral.com/news/national_world/nationa...

"Local authorities, not the military, are expected to charge Laurean when he is caught. North Carolina is one of 15 states without a fetal homicide law, so Laurean likely would only face charges in Lauterbach's death.

Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said he has no plans to step aside for a military prosecution. That makes it unlikely that Laurean would be prosecuted under the federal fetal homicide law passed in 2004 during the height of attention to the California trial of Scott Peterson, who was accused of murdering his pregnant wife, Laci. The law makes it a crime to harm a fetus during the assault of a pregnant woman."

That crazy church is at it again. They are know for protesting at military funerals. One of my grandmother's friends died in Iraq and these crazy people came to protest his funeral. But the patriot guard was there and kept them from getting too close. Gotta love the patriod guard!!!

    http://www.tdn.com/articles/2008/01/15/ap/us/d8...

"Marine officials said Tuesday that Lauterbach met with prosecutors in November and said she no longer believed Laurean was the father.

A pregnancy test performed in May, when she alleged that Laurean had raped her in March and April, was negative. A test done in June was positive, and doctors estimated the date of conception was May 14.

Naval investigators concluded the sexual encounter in March was not criminal, said Paul Ciccarelli, an agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The pair had a second sexual encounter about two weeks later that didn't include any threats, force, violence or coercion, Ciccarelli said.

"She asked him to stop, and he did stop," Ciccarelli said, saying that was the account Lauterbach gave to officials.

He said that she still considered both to be incidents of rape, and that Lauterbach's regimental commander treated her allegations seriously. Her commander was intent on taking the case to an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a grand jury proceeding."

Story from the Air Force Times, it has alot of info that I hadnt read yet. Also timelines from when she said she was raped and when she concieved. There were multiple assaults and she did have a protective order against him.
  • thepooh5
Also i read somewhere (i dont remember the link now, sorry guys) that in NC they are not able to charge someone with the murder of a fetus. If he is to be charged for that crime the federal government would have to try him. But so far NC had primary jurisdiction and wants to procecute.

You brought up a point I must look into. Surely they will charge him for killing his child. I'm here in NC and if NC can't get the job done, move over and let the feds charge him with murdering his child. WTH. I guess that legislation has not passed here - I will look. Of all the stupid laws passed - how could they not be able to prosecute the man for killing his fetus? How did they miss that one?
