S.C. - Some art students found the body of Marisha Jeter, 16, while taking photographs at Broad River. Jeter was a Union County High School student and a popular cheerleader at her high school.
Now, a couple have been arrested in connection to her death. Pernell Clayton Thompson, 20, and Yolanda Dee Thompson, 19, a couple married over the summer, asked to meet with Jeter on the night she went missing. At some point, Jeter was stabbed in the neck and then dumped over a bridge into the river. Jeter’s car was then driven several miles into Chester County, where it was set on fire.
The motive? Jealousy. Seems as if Jeter and Thompson had once been in a relationship and Mrs. Thompson did not like that they still remained in contact. They have both been charged with killing Jeter and are being held at the Union County Jail. Pernell Thompson has been a football player at Wingate University for the past three seasons and Jeter was the daughter of Manning Jeter, a former trustee on the Union County School Board.

I went to school with Pernell and this whole thing is a damn shame. I have since gotten the hell out of the area, trust me, you don’t wanna be there. Yes, that is apparently a yellow jacket. I always thought it looked dumb too. And I don’t remember Pernell being obviously greasy…perhaps murder does strange things to him. I don’t know.

Sucks, doesn’t it? I had some friends murder another friend right after i got out of high school and it was national news at the time. Stuff got really crazy for awhile, nobody really got to mourn the kid that got killed, none of it made any sense, and I was torn between embarrassment for my town and my friends and insane anger at my friends who were later convicted. It was jacked up, and it doesn’t ever go away.
All i can say is, thank you for not making excuses for Pernell and Yolanda. You seem to have some good sense about you – welcome, and I hope you find some peace.

That is so sad in itself — WTH are 12 year olds doing deciding who to have sex with? Maybe I was more sheltered than even I know, but damn. I was still on the little league team at 12. I still giggled when people mentioned sex. How can you be 12 and seriously deciding whether or not you are gonna have sexual relationships with the same sex or the opposite sex? Don’t kids just “play” anymore? Are we forcing or allowing our children to grow up too fast? What is the answer?

I don’t think we have much to do with it. Kids who “mature” early are a market that people love to sell to — magazines, tv, games, everything conspires to end childhood early. When I was 12 I was in the market for plastic horses, candy bars, and library books. Nowadays girls want their hair streaked, make up, sexy clothes and lots of it, manicures, tanning for “proms,” and so forth.

Well, whatever it is, it’s not a brand-new problem. Shanda was killed sixteen years ago, almost to the day. Thirteen years ago Diane Zamora got the bright idea to off her boyfriend’s girlfriend. Teenagers and children can be every bit as brutal as adults, and gender doesn’t seem to matter very much. If anything, girls can be especially vicious when a love triangle is involved.
