This is not a crime, but since we usually feature certain missing persons cases, I figured we may as well get this one up. Doesn’t sound like foul play, just a lost family, but still.

Fredrick Dominguez, 38, had moved to Paradise from Los Angeles to be closer to his children. On Sunday, after church, him and his three children, 18-year-old Christopher Dominguez, 14-year-old Alexis Dominquez and 12-year-old Joshua Dominquez, took a trip to Northern California in order to cut down a Christmas Tree. They were to make a day of it and spend the night with their dad. They have not been seen since. Their truck was found Monday night along Skyway Road, about 2½ miles north of Inskip, Calif., with no sign of them ever returning to it. Searchers found no sign of the missing people at the vehicle and any tracks had already been covered by heavy snow. Dominguez had never cut down a tree in this territory, but his 18-year-old son had. The missing people carried cellular phones, but calls placed to those numbers haven’t gone through. Lisa Sams, the children’s mother and ex-wife reported them missing on Monday evening when she found her children had not shown up for school. Sam’s said her children and ex-husband were wearing coats, but probably weren’t prepared for extremely cold weather. She said her son, Chris, has had extensive camping experience and is familiar with basic survival skills.

Dozens of searchers faced up to 7 feet of snow during their search and Mattie Watts, with Butte County Search and Rescue, said the crews were working in steep terrain, making their efforts even more dangerous. More searchers were expected to arrive Wednesday in the Philbrook area of Butte County. Search and rescue authorities report that further would-be volunteer searchers are not needed. Weather conditions in the search area are so severe, there is a concern that volunteers would themselves become lost or stuck. The Skyway is closed above Stirling City to all but official rescue volunteers.

You know what sucks about this. Its a non-custodial father spending TIME with his kids, doing family things….

This blows. I like dads who do things with their kids.

This doesn’t sound good, does it? I’m really hoping the eldest son really does have enough survival skills to be of help to his dad and siblings in this situation. Mr. Imp grew up at high Rockies altitudes and says that there are ways to survive in snowstorms like this, but honestly, if I were lost, I’d be a dead imp. I really hope that this family is found safely.

The poor mom. She must be frantic with worry.

This one kinda hits home a bit for me, as this guy moved to the area just to be close with the kids. This is one of those cases that I really, really, hope that they are all ok, but man it just sounds like bad news. No cell phone calls answered or made from any of them, no tracks, no clothing for the weather, treacherous terrain. The cabins in the area were searched with no signs of anyone being there. Everything just points to this ending very badly.

Prayers to all. I hope the weather will give the searchers a break. And if it is true about the eldest son’s survival skills – maybe they are hold up in a cave or something. Maybe they built a “lingtoo”(sp). With 4 of them, and no one being too young, I think they have a good chance of surviving, of finding or making shelter and getting wood, starting a fire — maybe? I see a glimmer of hope since the truck was found un-wrecked, for lack of a better word. Perhaps the truck just quit and they started walking as a family and no one was left alone. I pray.

I hope they are able to hold out somehow. Remember the family that took a wrong turn in the same type of weather? The dad died for sure, I’m not positive how the rest of the family fared.

Right on, Morbid, she said Hippieishly.

we see so many stories where the dads are absent or abusive or murderous that this one is all the sadder. Dude just wanted to take his kids to get a tree, make a memory, hang out with his teenagers. This bites.

Helluva trip just to cut down a Christmas tree. Did the father not realize how dangerous the situation could be. Damn, 7 ft. of snow, that’s a lot of snow, surely he knew what the weather was. Well, hopefully they will be found alive and kicking and learn a valuable lesson….(next year get the tree from Wally World or the local hardware store, much less treacherous and the tree is already dead) ;)

Ells, the rest of the family survived. That was so sad because if the dad hadnt gone out and tried to find help, he would still be alive. They said that when he died he was close to getting back to where the family was.

I dont understand this situation though, what could have happened? Did they jsut get lost and couldnt find their way back. I dont understand, it seems so strange. I’m going to be watching this one, soon something has to come up

It wasn’t snowing when they left to get the tree (Sunday, after church no less), and while the father had never done this before, the 18-year-old had.

I was thinking the same thing Hippie, it just seems so strange

I gotta go with the Hippie on that – who goes out in 7 feet of snow when not absolutely necessary? Or maybe the 7 ft came after they were reported missing – the article stated the mom reported them missing on Monday evening after she realized her kids had not gone to school – 7 ft in 24-36 hours still a huge amount?

I hope they are all found safe – It is so rare that we read about “good dads” – and thanks Morbid for posting this – even though it is sad – it is good to hear of a dad that would disrupt his normal life to move – just to be near to his kids. What a tragedy, a story of a good dad that could very well be dead. Why is it the “bad dads” live forever?

I lived in Idaho, and it is SO easy for the weather to change in the mountains. Not to mention if an inversion develops and you get more snow than is predicted.

Pure speculation-either their tracks got covered, or there was no snow cover yet at all to leave tracks. As for the phones, maybe there is hope there, if there aren’t towers in their area. It sounded like at least most of them had some type of wilderness experience, so they would know what was safe to eat…maybe they found or built some cover and they’re just waiting. I hope so anyway… one of the boys looks like a kid at my church, right down to the hairstyle.

Good news! I was thinking it as another dad-kills-kids scenario. I’m very glad to have been wrong.
