Archbishop Earl Paulk, co-founder of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church, is once again being accused of sexual abuse. This is just one more in a list of sexual misconduct incidents Paulk has been accused of.

  • First there was Jessica Battle. In 2001, the college student sued Paulk, accusing him of molesting her between the ages of 7 and 11, and later of forcing himself on her when she was 17. This was settled out of court in 2004 for 400,000 dollars.
  • Then in 2003, Cindy Hall came forward and claimed that Paulk had convinced her into a lengthy affair when she was 23 that also included her having sex with Paulk’s brother, Don. She accused Paulk of using his position to influence her. She admitted to lying under oath in the Battle case and chose not to become involved with the Brewer case.
  • He was then sued by Mona Brewer on August 31, 2005, claiming Paulk misused his position to manipulate her into a sexual relationship that started in 1989 (she would have been around 20 or 21), and claiming Paulk owed her $400,000 for a loan Brewer issued to settle the Jessica Battle suit. Paulk denies the sexual relationship, but his attorney did not stating that it was brief and that Brewer was the initiator.
  • Now an adult grandaughter, Penielle “Penie” White, has stated that Paulk touched her inappropriately when she was about eight years old. She said made the allegations in a sworn deposition in relation to the Brewer case. She also stated that she was present when her grandfather fondled Jessica Battle.

ells9824 -- "I love God in the way I was taught about him. I was not taught that I can never do enough to get into heaven, nor when I die that I will have to go to some in between place to work off my sins. I was taught that everyone sins because we’re imperfect, and the way to heaven is kind of like Sam’s. If you can’t get a card, get a friend. Jesus is the card holder."

I'll go with you on that 100% - we can be two charred bunnies together. I may not have picked the "Sam's" analogy - but you got the message across and I stand with you.
  • I really DID think that health care people would be ...I don't know, immune. A friend of mine is a surg tech and she told me the DAY before surgery not to worry about it, they look at everyone!

    Comforting...thanks

And, Hippie comes through with that reassuring fact for all of us patients going under the knife soon.............. ;)

"Worse than nurses who snicker about what men have under the sheet when they’re in recovery? " Geeez Ells I was only snickering at the shitty job the surgeon did. lmao ;)
  • I'm going to be one charred bunny after y'all read this...

I love God in the way I was taught about him. I was not taught that I can never do enough to get into heaven, nor when I die that I will have to go to some in between place to work off my sins. Quite a many years ago there was a ...man?woman?alien? no one is quite sure what it was-that posted on a newsgroup. Morbid knows who I'm talking about, probably. Aaaaaaaaaanyway...when the church scandals were hitting left and right he posted something that I'll paraphrase to the best of my ability:

Society has conditioned us to think priests and other religious leaders are staircases higher in value that the rest of us. THAT is why this is such a big deal, when really, its just like any other person who takes advantage of their post to abuse/coerce/whatever you want to call it.

Are they worse than a doctor who heals, then fondles while the patient is still out? Worse than nurses who snicker about what men have under the sheet when they're in recovery? Worse than day care workers, teachers, and on and on.

Again... not my words....but there may be a little merit to someone's psychotic ramblings.

Catholic priets prey on girls as well as boys. Recently I watched "deliver us from evil" which was about Father O’Grady who molested hundreds of boys and girls of all ages, including a nine-month-old. He even "coerced" a mother to have an affair with him so that he could rape her son.
    so, so,so, sick.
  • moscow04
Catholics seem to have a massive "3rd column" of child molesters. They hide behind the Catholic Church and utilize its systems to pray on the young.

It's a similar psychology to someone like Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho, who is practically outed as a homosexual, though supports its official suppression.

Or the gay preacher who led a major McChurch, but was outed by his male whore.

Or the s*ithead in Florida, Foley, who was sponsoring bills to make him look like a champion of children's rights, when all he wanted was to violate them.

It's f*cking disgusting to watch this stuff play out. In religion and politics, the more someone preaches sexual suppression, the more likely they are a predator themselves. It just happens over and over again.

I don't agree with the death penalty being used on any crime that did not result in death. That being said, I wouldn't mind early releases for victimless criminals so that we've got room to house these sickos up for life.
  • Rosie
Hell, states are starting to abolish the death penalty, i.e. New Jersey. So now what?
  • thepooh5
Yes, I agree and stated it happens in all religions - I guess the press is the key, Kathy. And, I agree pedophiles can't be successfully treated - never treated good enough to guarantee they will not repeat offend.

USE THE DEATH PENALTY WHEN THERE ARE NO QUESTIONS. USE WELL AND USE IT OFTEN!!!!!!

See in watching the news about this I couldn't understand why someone would sue a preacher for getting into a bad situation - if you are a willing participant then how can you say you were sexually harassed, etc.? I'm thinking folks in this church started seeing a man who thought he was better than God or his congregation and they had to figure out a way to bring him down a few notches. I've always said that I didn't think Jesus would stand in a mega church or need as much money as they seem to bring in - where folks get the idea that a church has to be all about power and money seem to be missing the message.
  • Kathy
I'm telling ya. Some people just like to bone.
  • Rosie
Okay, ya'll are missing another piece of this bizare puzzle - I live in Georgia and have been reading about this case and the local news folks have been all over this preacher for a while - BUT, come to find out the new paster of this church, D.L. Paulk I believe is his name, IS actually EARL PAULK'S OWN SON - he is his nephew born to his brother and his wife, but as a result of the Brewer case the Cobb County D.A. had a DNA test done on the nephew and sure enough he is Rev. Paulk's son - there was an article in the Atlanta Journal where they interviewed the son/nephew. At one point they tried to say his uncle/father just helped his Mom and Dad along because they were having fertility problems - WHATEVER! This church has gone from like this mega church of 18,000 to maybe 1500 members. If other religious stuff hasn't put a bad taste in your mouth this certainly will.
  • Kathy
It happens in all religions pooh. Catholic priests just have gotten the most publicity lately.

I think these leaders are given too much power and they take advantage of it. It is also my opinion that most religions try to treat sexuality as immoral and sinful. It ends up having the opposite effect. It is not uncommon to find sexual misconduct among their leaders. Even if it is just adultery.

And as far as pedophiles go, I think its a sickness that can't be treated. Some pedophiles are drawn to this line of work because of the automatic trust and access they are given with the job title - much like teachers, doctors, and coaches.
  • thepooh5
Exactly, Kathy - I don't understand either - they're adults. If that holds water, hell, I want to sue for my bad relationships - "they coerced me".

My ex-husband owe's me millions!!!!!!!! When I collect, we'll pick a central spot to the most of us -- and I'll fly everyone in, so we can bash the baby killers and rapers together over a nice cold drink.

What is amazing to this story - he's the first priest (that I can remember) molesting girls instead of boys.

What's up with all the priests liking little children - boys or girls. Does being a catholic priest = child molester? I know that other religions also have their leaders blasted for the same thing - but most of the time it is the catholics. Why - is that what they teach in the "priest schools"? Where I'm from our preacher "get the calling".

I cannot understand adult attraction to children. Since visiting here, I have wondered what's going on in their heads that could "turn them on"? I just tried to imagine what they saw that turned them on - LET ME STATE CLEARLY, I AM NOT CONSIDERING BECOMING A PEDOPHILE! The Kelsey Peterson thing - okay, I went to school to get my kid and there were the school age boys - I did not find any of them enticing. Instead, it was more like......"why doesn't he pull his pants up where they belong?" or "did he wear his hair like that on purpose?" or "Hey, don't speak to that other kid like that!!" So, I guess I'm asking, how does an adult woman get turned on by a boy? Or vise versa.
  • Kathy
"but I am sure Paulk singled out fragile women who were searching for something in their lives (not necessarily sex) and exploited it"

Not unlike what I have seen in clubs and bars every single weekend...;)
  • Well, not speaking for all of these women, but I am sure Paulk singled out fragile women who were searching for something in their lives (not necessarily sex) and exploited it, using his position of "power" to do so. Probably not unlike how any adult can seduce a child. I guess. But then again, it could all be a bunch of women looking for some dough.
  • Kathy
I don't understand how adults can be coerced into a sexual relationship. Maybe its because I don't understand religion. What do you tell someone, beside threatening their lives, to make them have sex with you...and your brother?
  • I added a few more details, Kathy. Aside from the two incidents involving the two children, there was never any force used, just coercion.
  • Kathy
So are these all civil cases, not criminal?

I don't understand how someone would be okay with taking money to make up for being sexually abused as a child. You would think they 'd want them in jail.

I'm assuming that the other women were all adults. I'd really need to know more about those relationships if there was no forcible rape.

I'm sure he'll say God told him to do it
