A woman sentenced to 10 years in prison in the death of her newborn son 10 years ago is appealing her sentence to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Dana Deegan of White Shield was sentenced in May after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge in December.

And one more question, doesn't it take a court order to "make you" give a DNA sample? She was probably dumb enough to just let them have the sample when they ask for it, after all she had gotten away with it for 5 years. Stupid bitch.

Wonder. It is pretty clearly reported that the baby died of starvation and dehydration. It suffered horribly. Also, they linked her to the death via a DNA sample she gave in 2004.

The suitcase containing the body was found in November 1999 by a rancher repairing fences. Prosecutors said the baby was found in a one-piece sleeper and socks, wrapped in a blanket and towel, and in a plastic bag.

The child became known as "Baby Moses," and community members paid burial expenses. Authorities eventually identified his mother through DNA testing. Deegan volunteered a DNA sample to the FBI in 2004.

She told Hovland that she gathered her older children — ages 1, 2 and 5 — and took them to her mother's home. She returned to her own home about two weeks later "by myself," she said.

I don't think the baby suffered, she fed it to give her long enough to go under the kitchen sink to get a bag and smuttered him. surely he didn't live long in plastic. Starvation is a slow, painful and horrible way to die. As someone who would LOVE more children, breeders like these that can pop 'em out without even thinking about it piss me off. I don't care how stressed she was. There are hundreds of couples and single people out there that would have provided that baby with a loving home. She did one of the most selfish things possible.

As a caseworker, she even knew where she could take that baby and drop him off safely without fear of legal reprisal.

She had three children already, was unemployed, no vehicle, and the father was an absentee drunk. When she had the kid, she dressed it, took her three kids to her mother's house for two weeks leaving the newborn to die. When she returned, she put it in a suitcase and dumped it. This was back in 1999. The discovery of the baby was somewhat like the discovery of Riley Sawyers. The baby was deemed "Baby Moses".

Deegan had worked about six years as a caseworker with the tribal child development program, which makes home visits to track the physical and intellectual development of children through age 5.
