December 7, 2007 by Morbid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The sad-sack, infant killin’ babysitter, Melissa Thompson, 36, is back in the news. The married mother of three has now officially been charged with murder by a Clay County grand jury for shaking 4-month old Jacob Mattingly like a maraca. The 4-month-old died from injuries while she was watching the infant. She initially told police that her toddler had fell ont he baby, then later stated she hit the Jacob’s head on the wooden end of a changing table. Thompson was initially charged with child endangerment, but the more serious charge came after the baby died.

because it can’t get said enough:
NEVER SHAKE A BABY.
Shaking causes shearing brain injuries. the brain bounces around like jello, ricocheting off the inside of the skull. Rips and tears occur, leaving babies blind, deaf, and/or learning disabled in relatively mild cases, vegetative or dead in worse ones. Sometimes symptoms can take hours to appear.
This lady deserves a good shake & bake session if she’s guilty, and it kinda sounds like she is. Niiice. Fucking Missouri.

Seriously, what is it about Missouri and all these sickos? No offense to anyone, but Miami,FL is starting to look like Shangi La to me compared to that place

And be honest folks…if you were crying uncontrollably,is shaking you going to make you stop? Odds are… NO.
Dumb bitch.

And she has 3 kids of her own. She knew better. Idiot.

I’m not so sure, Solange. I currently live in S.W. Florida, supposedly a lot saner than the Miami area, and trust me, we have our fair share of sickos. We moved here to get out of my hometown of Denver – away from the drugs, violence, gangs, etc., but they are all here, too. Now we are thinking about heading back West. We’ll never escape it. Mayberry, where are you?????? LOL

In an instant, this woman does the unthinkable by shaking a baby. She looks really fucking regretful now. She has kids of her own, she should know, if you get aggravated with the baby, put the baby in a safe place and walk the fuck away. A screaming baby is fine for a few minutes, whilst a parent or caretaker can take some time for a break. This is such a sad story.
Not long ago, near where I live. A young guy was watching a friend’s baby and the baby wouldn’t stop crying and the kid shook her. The baby died in this case as well. The guy was 18 years old.
I’m with ells9824, why shake the baby? When my babies were colicky and screaming for hours, I thought I was gonna go nuts, I cried a lot, but picking them up and shaking them, never entered my mind as a helpful solution, or an angered reaction…whatever, ya get my point. It just seems so stupid when like others have mentioned, there is tons of information out there about Shaking Baby Syndrome.
I’m curious, what kind of sentencing will she be facing?
My nursing recommendation. Xanax! (well, unless it’s a mom and she’s breast feeding…wouldn’t want to stone the baby)

How many of these people would kick a barking dog or a meow-y kitty?
Its a BAY BEE. Babies Cry.

I’m glad they’re charging her with murder instead of manslaughter like they usually do when a child dies. I’ll never understand why they don’t treat baby killers the way they do someone that kills an adult!

HippiePoet, I did the same thing. When the babies cried I’d walk to the bathroom and cry. BTW, LOVE the nursing recomendation! Can hopefully future grandparents get that too? (if my daughter is reading this, think B-A-B-Y)

Hippiepoet–yes! Especially in a case like this where she probably didn’t have any real emotional attachment to the kid. She could have put in some quality ear plugs and pointed and laughed, instead of killing it.

I just don’t understand why people do this. Like everyone already said it just make the baby cry more. My daughter just turned one and she was 6 weeks early and had massive digestive problems, the poor thing had such bad gas all of the time. She screamed and screamed and than screamed some more. I never wanted to shake her because I knew that she was in pain, but there where a couple of times I almost lost it. It does get to you after you have gotten no sleep for a week, that is why my wife and I would take turns with her. I would sleep with the baby and my wife would sleep in the tv room and than we would switch, but a couple of times we would both just go into the other room and let her cry herself to sleep. The thing is once you have done something like this you can’t take it back, so do yourself a favor and leave the room.

yeah, i mean srsly. Shaking an infant is not normal biological instinct. Just look at the animal kingdom. You never hear “A dingo shook my baby!”
Sorry. Please pass the bowl.

yeah I know, Missouri is getting pretty bad with things like this, but then this part of the state does have the honor of being “The Meth Capital of the Midwest.” Stupid woman. My kids all had colic and you know you just dont do that. No excuse.

Missouri is a third world state, unfortunately part of a first world country.

…. stories like these about babysitters is the sole reason that my baby is in the care of her loving Daddy who holds her and plays with her all day….

That’s the sad part, you can’t trust anyone with your baby, except the ones who love them regrdless…

I have read all above comments and it seems we all agree. We must all contact our elected officials and push for tougher laws and legislation. jacob was my grandson and he will be forever remembered. If we as citizens of this state continue to allow the things that are going on around us I ask who is at fault?
12:18 pm on March 28th, 2009
You are very right. Im sorry for your loss. Know that when we read these stories- our hearts go out to the victims and their families. You are in our prayers… Somthing does need to be done! It seems that by standing back and doing nothing.. we almost condone these sickening acts. How many more children have to die before somthing will be done? Does it have to hit home to be reality for us?
