20071201183055bt3 Padmaja Enjeti Throws Infant Over 2nd Floor Railing; Twice

PLANO, Texas – Padmaja S. Enjeti, 37, dropped her daughter over the second floor railing of the family’s home where she landed on the floor below. She then went and picked up her daughter, went back up the stairs and did it again. She then called 911, telling them she had dropped her baby on its head. The infant suffered a skull fracture, but is now out of the hospital she, along with her 8-year-old brother, have both been placed in foster care.  Ms. Enjeti told police that she suffers from a chemical imbalance and this was the first time she had tried to hurt her daughter. Ms. Enjeti and her husband are from India and have lived in the U.S. for 12 years and in Plano for the past decade, her attorneys say. They say the couple are professionals in the information technology industry and are devout Hindus.

Here is where things get a bit more interesting. Ms. Enjeti learned she had schizophrenia after her daughter’s birth and was having hallucinogenic episodes. Ms. Enjeti was taking the anti-psychotic drug Haldol. Sound familiar? It’s the same drug that another Plano mother, Dena Schlosser, was prescribed but had stopped taking before killing her 10-month-old daughter by cutting off her arms in NovemberNovember reviewsNovember reviews 2004. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity and hospitalized in April 2006. Ms. Enjeti has been charged with injury to a child and is being held on $1 million bail. Her attorneys are not happy with the bail amount stating that she has mental health issues that need to be addressed and can’t be addressed in jail.

Thank’s, Where’s Rob, for the info and having a heart as black as coal.

Y’know, Andrea Yates had been on Haldol in the months prior to killing her children, as well.

I have been majorly depressed before, was on zoloft and prozac (not at same time) and never had the urge to throw my kids off anything. Or hurt them in any way. I say that is a sorry excuse.

Not excusing anyone for their actions, but there has been links to drugs and violence. Haldol has now came up on a few occasions with mothers who have recently gave birth hurting their children, Accutane, the acne medication, being linked to suicides, etc.

I don’t know if any of you have ever read the possible side effects of Haldol, or Haldol withdrawal, but it’s prett nasty. One of the side effects is Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). It is a possibly fatal syndrome that can be caused by Haldol. Symptoms may include fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating.

Another thing funny about Haldol is that it is not even known exactly how it works.

I would hate for drugs to be used as an excuse everytime an infant is hurt or killed, but when you look at the facts that she has never been violent before, she has an 8-year-old, no reports of any abuse to infant before, she is married and both are working professionals, etc…it does seem silly not to look at the drug angle.

I had a roommate on Haldol when I was in college. She went from mildy depressed to psychotic bitch in a matter of days. She was doing all kinds of crazy shit like waiting up for us sitting in the dark on nights we went out without her. “Where have you been?” Spooky. She was a little obsessed and possessive of us before the drug, I think it just took it up to a whole other level. I can see how an already messed up person could go off like this.

All the other anti-depressant drugs, I think I’ve had them all and all they do is make me not give a fuck. It is amazing how happy you can be when you just don’t give a fuck.:)

Ditto Kathy. Ive been on antidepressants on and off since I was a teenager. And although it does take away the sadness, it also takes away a lot of the joy. Most of the time I jsut feel blah. But, its either one or the other, I guess

This drug is different than antidepressants, I think it is very possible that it might have driven this woman to this. WHy do doctors keep prescribing it? How many kids have to die? Am I missing something?

In regards to that Dena lady, not only had she cut her daughter’s arms off, but she had sliced deep into her own shoulder. If that’s not insanity, I dont know what is. Did you see the pic of her after being arrested? She was smiling all creepy!

This lady needs to be treated not as a convicted criminal but as some one who needs medical help. More importantly, the children must be reunited with the father.

In this instance, the Prosecution and Judge seem to have taken a harsh view of the situation. In a similar situation earlier, their stance was more compassionate.

Why should the children be separated from each other? Why should the father lose everything all at once? He lost his wife and kids and the Justice system places hurdles in his way by placing an unreasonable bail amount ($1MM).

I hope the Judge delivers some compassionate justice. He has already convicted Ms. Enjeti by placing such a huge bond ($1MM). The Judge should immediately reduce the bail amount and enable Ms. Enjeti proper medical treatment. He should reunite the children with the sole functional parent.

I agree with the previous poster – the lady has no history of past violence and should not be treated as a criminal but someone who needs serious medical help.
If the delivery caused symptoms that required treatment, the judge must pay attention to the side affects of such medications and her current mental state.

Also, there was no witness. What if she was ‘pretending & hallucinating” that she was throwing the child when actually the child was only hit hard or pinched hard. There is a difference. Though initial evaluations of the child said skull fracture, later on the doctors said the child only had contusions. The child is fine. It is unreal that a 22 month old was *dropped* 10-13 ft and did not suffer a single fracture? That too supposedly being dropped TWICE? How can that be?

Being so mentally distraught, maybe she imagined killing her baby and thumped the floor herself? There are so many unknowns here and I fear that reckless prescriptions of medications without proper monitoring are only worsening serious mental problems of women who go through postpartum. Her call was a cry for Help!

I think the mother has had this reaction more due to the side effects of the drug HALDOL, which was being used to treat her.The judge should question the doctor as to why this was prescribed knowing its serious side effects. When she spoke to 911 she was already having the severe side effects of the drug. The judge has taken a very harsh view of sending her to jail and seperating the children from their father. In my view the mother should be kept in a hospital giving the right medication and allow visitation rights to the husband and the children. That way the children and the husband will feel assured that some day things will get back to Normal.
If the doctors comptency is questionable the judge could allow them to get treated in reputed places like Mayo Clinic/Baylors college of medicine etc.
I hope the judge sees the case in the right perspective and ensures that the family is united.

What side effects are possible with Haldol?

    Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

    Headache

    Blurred vision

Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia)

    Dry mouth

    Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)

    Drowsiness

    Confusion

    Blood disorders

    Abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias)

    Low blood pressure (hypotension)

    Seizures (convulsions)

Difficulty in passing urine (urinary retention)

Abnormal movements of the hands, legs, face, neck and tongue, eg tremor, twitching, rigidity (extrapyramidal effects)

    Increased salivation

High blood prolactin (milk producing hormone) level (hyperprolactinaemia). Sometimes this can lead to symptoms such as breast enlargement, production of milk and stopping of menstrual periods.

Rhythmical involuntary movement of the tongue, face, mouth and jaw, which may sometimes be accompanied by involuntary movements of the arms and legs (tardive dyskinesia)

Uncontrolled rolling of the eyes and neck (oculogyric crisis). Requires immediate treatment.

High temperature combined with falling levels of consciousness, paleness, sweating and a fast heart beat (neuroleptic malignant syndrome). Requires stopping the medicine and immediate medical treatment.

    Anxiety, restlessness and agitation (akathisia)

Disturbances of the gut such as constipation, indigestion, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain

With so many side effects has the doctor counselled the patient enough? Or has the doctor passed it off to make the next fast buck?

McKINNEY — A Plano mother was sentenced to three years in prison Monday for twice dropping her child from the balcony of her house last year.

Padmaja Enjeti was convicted last week of all three charges against her, including attempted capital murder. She must serve ten years community service after her release.

Enjeti’s lawyer claimed she suffered a psychotic episode at the time of the incidents.

The child survived the falls from the second story balcony.
