LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Lauderhill police said that a 12-year-old autistic boy was stabbed in both eyes with a dagger by his Aunt. For reasons unknown at this time, the family waited about 10 hours before notifying authorities. The aunt also had a stab wound to one eye, but it was unclear if it was self-inflicted. The reason for the attack is also unknown.
“The child is autistic, we understand he can’t speak, and now we understand he won’t be able to see,” said Lauderhill police Lt. Rick Rocco.
The boy was transferred by ambulance from Broward General Medical Center to one of the world’s premier eye institutes at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. The aunt is under police guard and is listed in good condition. Doctors said they are going to try to save the boy’s vision. Police were questioning two other family members who were at the home at the time.

Dec 1, 2007 at 8:33 am -One of the hardest things to deal with, when it comes to children with autism, is that they refuse to maintain eye contact. They just won’t do it. Problem with the mirror neurons, and not having that innate understanding that most of us share which tells us that a person’s thoughts are taking place behind their eyeballs, so to engage them there.
As a result, you see a lot of uneducated people getting angry, even hostile with autistic kids because they won’t look where you want them to look. Just thought I would mention this because it could explain the target and motivation.
Also, I wouldn’t put it past an autistic kid to stab himself in the eye with scissors. And then do the other eye a few hours later. They aren’t too bright unless you want to know what day of the week you were born on 40+ years ago, or whether or not 385728547291 is a prime number*.

Seriously, that’s an excellent insight about the eyes of autistics. I guess I knew that from experience, but never thought about it in this context. You could be on to something.

LAUDERHILL (CBS4) ― A Lauderhill woman accused of stabbing her 14-year old autistic nephew in both eyes before stabbing herself has been charged with attempted first degree murder.
40-year old Lisa Babington underwent surgery at Broward General Medical Center after to repair the damage to her eye. Sunday afternoon she was transported to the county’s jail facility.
The boy was taken to a hospital in Miami. Doctors were not able to save one eye and are not sure if he’ll permanently lose vision in the other.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, that’s terrible,” said neighbor, Joanne Kull “He’s a cute little boy and nothing like that should happen to any child.”
Kull cannot comprehend why someone would do that.
“The instrument that we believe that inflected the injuries, at least to the young boy appears to be a dagger,” explained Lieutenant Rick Rocco of Lauderhill Police Department. “I guess you would characterize it as a military style knife about 6 inches long with about a 4 inch blade.”
Police said Stella Babington, the boy’s grandmother told them her daughter was speaking about biblical references and the devil while she stabbed the boy. Police said the Lisa Babington threatened her mother not to call police. Stella Babington did not call police or fire rescue for at least 10 hours after the attack.
The child and his aunt were first taken to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
“The behavior is so bizarre, so outrageous that we are going to find out just why she did this” Lieutenant Rick Rocco told CBS4’s Cary Codd.
Police have not determined what charges, if any, will be filed against Stella Babington.

YOu name the year he can tell you the location. And he lives in VAncover Washington and you can name any street in that town or Portland Oregan and he can get you there. So he is not stupid and I could not imagine poking his eyes out. This aunt was sick in the head. What a freakin idiot.

Dec 26, 2007 at 11:27 am -I have an autistic 16 year old son, and he is very bright - all A’s and B’s in normal classrooms - with some help from an autistic specialist in his school. He’s brighter than his own good, and, Swivel, it is very difficult for him to maintain eye contact with us, but when reminded, he really tries hard. He’s quiet - speaks softly and in monotone, sweet, and Mr. Spock (Star Trek) logical. He’d never dream of harming anyone, and certainly not himself. This story just really hits home for me.

In regards to the aunt, I dont know what to say. It is sick. I have a feeling that she would have done something like this even if the kid wasn’t autistic. She is obviously crazy to begin with, and all kids are disobedient at some point in their lives. It just makes it so sad that this little angel has to suffer so much horror and difficulties at such a young age….
