Nov 30, 2007 at 5:28 pm -just wanted to point something out. Being acquitted of murder b/c of an insanity charge does not really get you off the hook. Those places are hell, and full of terrifying and disturbed people…it is by no means a pleasant experience, and far from “cushy”. Many people assume (juries included) that finding someone not guilty by reason of insanity is somehow giving them a pass at justice, while in reality they are probably NEVER EVER getting out of those institutions and better off in prison or dead.

Ya’ll have a good weekend and I hope to check in over the weekend to see what’s going on in this world. Lets hope nothing awful happens and everyone has a peaceful weekend.
Peace!

Also, this woman is a bitch, should die for this, blah blah blah blah.
She should have gotten a dog rather than getting knocked up…twice.

Nov 30, 2007 at 9:31 pm -JustaMOM, I had asked you some questions about CASA on Rowan’s thread, not realizing everyone had sort of picked up the conversation over here. I read what you said here so no need to respond over there. And thank you again, between you and Solange you have given me the courage to give CASA a shot. It sounds like a really great worth while program.
I don’t know though solange I’m not sure I will have the will power for option 3, but I figure if I atleast make to option 1, I’m better off than option 2.
And Rosie, I’m guessing the key on stick was in the bathroom already with mom

Nov 30, 2007 at 10:45 pm -Wow, why are all these parents killing their children? This woman looks like she is ready to flip the fuck out. My god, the agony those babies went through. Dammit sisters, give your babies away if you don’t want them. Give someone else the chance to have children that really want them.
As far as spiffy mental facilities for these mental patients. In Fulton, Missouri they have a max. security mental ward. I visited there before when in nursing school and again when I applied for a job at the institution. I can tell you it is state/government run and it was no fancy place. It look just like a prison. It was a sad place. I thought the first day I was there…”I’d rather be dead then to live like this”. I feel like this would be an appropriate place to house a murdering mother for the rest of her life. Loads and loads of time to think about it and little or nothing to do with your time.
Maybe I have too much of a conscience, because for me, if I ever committed a crime, the guilt and worry of prison confinement for life, would make me want to take my own life….to live within my own thinking brain, would be agonizing hell. So that’s one reason I feel the Death Penalty is an easy way out…once dead you don’t have to suffer with the thoughts of what you’ve done, your free, man, free as can be.

I think a lot of this comes from our moral decay in America. Liberal assault on our family values. They have the mindset “if it feels good, do it”…
59
Ruby
Nov 30, 2007 at 11:14 pm -Liberal assault? Pffft. Where ya been lately? Liberals haven’t been running the show in quite some time now. It’s your neocon boys setting the pace.
Look, I’m quite the liberal progressive — born and bred in the Northeast, even — and I don’t know a single murderer, rapist, drug addict, welfare cheat, arsonist, etc. etc. etc. Heck, I even know my fair share of homosexuals — some of them are even married(!) — but none of them have killed their children in a quickie food mart.
How about we look at what went wrong in the life of the individual and the family and try to find what’s wrong, instead of painting broad strokes, shall we?
Honestly, as was discussed in the Riley Sawyers thread, I think you’ll find socioeconomic factors are key rather than the national political climate. My guess is that the most significant defining characteristics of the most heinous offenders will be 1. low income, and 2. lack of education. Just a hunch…

LOL! Where shall I begin? “buy a clue?” Seriously? You seem to mistake me for a much younger and more urban person than I am. Baggy pants? Backwards baseball cap? Do you think I’m 15? LOL. As for American IDOL (note spelling), I don’t watch TV any more, but I’ve never watched “reality” TV in my life.
“Don’t go to the dark side of politics” with you….why not? Is that supposed to intimidate me?
And yes, the earth is warming. You might notice a man named Al Gore has been doing quite a bit to try to let people know. You may remember him — he won the popular vote for the Presidency in 2000 and, quite possibly, the Florida vote as well. We’ll never know. But he’s one of them there liberals you don’t like. lol.
By the way, I agree that Ms. Hawes’ picture looks like she is on something.
Ok, I’m going back to lurking. I’m not going to get into mud-slinging with you, as this thread is supposed to be about this sad criminal case.

Dec 1, 2007 at 8:38 am -The reason it is hard to adopt is because there are people like me out there, who would snatch kids up if they were free to put them to work around my house, and conduct psychological research that I have a hard time getting the APA to sign off on, much less get a grant to pay volunteers.
BTW, I babysit for FREE if any of you are in the South East region of the United States. I will drive no more than 500 miles to watch your kids for you, free of charge.

Yep and then you have those “collectors”, you know the ones with a hundred cats living in their feces encrusted trailer. Imagine that, but with kids.
“BTW, I babysit for FREE if any of you are in the South East region of the United States. I will drive no more than 500 miles to watch your kids for you, free of charge.”
Cool. Can you be here on Saturday night and do you have insurance? You will have to sign a waiver releasing me of all liability of what my child may subject you to. She’s an angel (of the darkness) really….

I cannot believe how incredibly stupid you are. I mean rock-hard stupid. Dehydrated-rock-hard stupid. Stupid so stupid that it goes way beyond the stupid we know into a whole different dimension of stupid. You are trans-stupid stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid collapsed on itself so far that even the neutrons have collapsed. Stupid gotten so dense that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid. Blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid. Your writing has to be a troll. Nothing in our universe can really be this stupid. Perhaps this is some primordial fragment from the original big bang of stupid. Some pure essence of a stupid so uncontaminated by anything else as to be beyond the laws of physics that we know. I’m sorry. I can’t go on. This is an epiphany of stupid for me. After this, you may not hear from me again for a while. I don’t have enough strength left to deride your ignorant questions and half baked comments about unimportant trivia, or any of the rest of this drivel. Duh.

Dec 1, 2007 at 11:14 am -Great, political flame wars.
Barbara, it is EXTREMELY close minded to say that our current domestic situation is the fault of Bill Clinton. That is one of the most absurd things I’ve ever heard in my life. I dislike both sides of our political system but I must say that we as a country were much better off under Clinton’s administration.
I love how Republicans can’t seem to take the blame for any of their mistakes. Always pass the buck to someone else. Iraq, rising oil prices, crumbling economy are all the fault of someone who left office SEVEN YEARS AGO? That, my friend, is what you call “rock-hard stupid”.

Can you please take your political debates to the forums? You’ll get lots of people there that are more than happy to debate with you. Though I don’t really see anything other than statements with no facts or statistics in your ramblings.
BTW, just so you know, calling someone stupid is not seen as intelligent debate there. Seriously.

Dec 1, 2007 at 12:18 pm -I am not a republican, I vote independent. I am sick of the Clinton’s and the Bush’s! I am just saying the moral decay of our society is what is why we see all this violence in America today. Look at the garbage coming out of Hollyweird. The PC garbage coming out of public schools. The ACLU banning our flags from our own front yards.
I have family in Iraq, and guess what? We are winning.

Dec 1, 2007 at 12:37 pm -Mr. Vindictive and Kathy, thank you for your posts.
Babara, thank you for that absolutely riviting display of your rhetorical agility. Wow, were you on the debate team? “Blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid” Honestly, that must have just shut down the competition.
FYI, the ACLU has never banned flags “from our own front yards”. In fact, even if it wanted to (which it wouldn’t), the ACLU does not have the power to effect a ban like that. That would be up to state or federal legislatures. But no such ban exists anywhere of which I am aware. If you have facts that show otherwise, I’d love to see them.
And to everyone else here: I apologize. It was not my intent to hijack this thread.

Maybe “PART” of the reason the media highlights more stories about abuse against caucasion children is because there is infact a higher incidence of violence against them, according to those statistics.

“must be at least 21, have a CA Drivers License, car and car insurance, pass a background clearance, complete 30 hours of training, and be sworn in by the presiding juvenile court judge. Child Advocates of San Bernardino County also asks for an 18 month commitment.”
That is a really huge commitment. Not to say that being able to help just one child would not be worth it!
I will let you know and I would appreciate if you would do the same Solange.

Dec 1, 2007 at 3:02 pm -I am really very shocked at how many of these different chapters have posted on their front page that they have no opportunities at this time.
My mother lives in Northern California and I told her about CASA. This is something right up her ally. She has talked on numerous occations about her desire to be a foster parent. Considering I am 37 I kinda figure her mothering days are past. But how great would CASA be for her and she has the drive and the ass kicking temperment to get it done. Unfortunately, ther is only “one” chapter anywhere near her. And they claim to not need any help at this time. Seems odd, I am certain there are children in need in her community or those surrounding.

Dec 1, 2007 at 4:31 pm -Re: posts 71 and 72.
Morbid, did your source for those charts outline the ‘key’ to those charts? Is it per a certain number of people, or are those straight numbers for the entire nation? (That may not be clear. I’m trying to say, are we talking 400 homicides of white children under 5 in 1995 for the entire country, or is it 400 per 1 million of population or some such?) Does it say?
And Kristi, I think you’ll find that if these are absolute numbers, the ones for whites are higher, but the percentages are lower. Whites represent a significantly larger segment of the American population than blacks. Again, perhaps Morbid can clarify for us from his source.
80
Kristi
Dec 1, 2007 at 4:44 pm -That may correct Ruby, I just took it as a straight up number of victims rather than a percentage, since I did not see anything indicative of a percentage number.

Dec 1, 2007 at 5:50 pm -That doesnt make sense Kristi, about them not needing help. My chapter in Miami FL didnt mention much, just a link where you could put your info and that they will be in touch. Maybe depending on where you live there may not be as many of these cases as a big city like Miami? I still am surprised that they dont need help though, very strange

If you read back through the thread (on page 1), Morbid posted a link to a recent story in the news about a dog who was stabbed by a neigbor. The dog was owned, it seems, but Jeanette Hawes younger brother, and she is quoted in the article expressing dismay that someone could do this to an innocent pooch. How Morbid finds these things is beyond me… but I’m glad he does.

Dec 1, 2007 at 8:57 pm -I don’t particularly think this had anything to do with the dog. She was fired a SECOND time from her job at the post office and had just purchased a new car. One article I read quoted a close friend of hers as saying she was afraid of losing her car and her apartment. I even found a video where said friend played a message she left on his cell phone saying how she wanted to be free. He was convinced she was going to kill herself also but the police got there first. IMHO…she just put a new twist on going postal.
On a side note…I think she must have either been the laziest postal worker on the planet or EXTREMELY belligerent to her superiors to get fired twice. The people im my local PO are both lazy and inconsiderate assholes. Many times they have left my mail behind and one day they never came down my street at all even though it was NOT a holiday. I’ve complained over and over about it. Once they even told me someone would be back before 5:00 to collect my mail….do you think anyone ever came??? FUCK NO! None of THEM have been fired!

Dec 2, 2007 at 1:56 pm -Oh no, why did I watch that video. What two beautiful children. Did you see that little boy? Oh my god, how could someone look into that little face and then hurt him. I was a young mother myself, got pregnant at 19 and had my son at 20, and it was so unbelievably hard. I certainly didnt hurt my child, but the point Im trying to make is that I can see how someone who isnt right in the head to begin with would lose it having TWO young children, while being only 22 years old. I dont understand why people continue to have children at such a young age. I wish that I had waited longer, not so much for me, but for my poor son who had to endure his early years with a mother who didnt know what the hell she was doing. I really wish there was a way to enfore that people not be able to have kids until they are 25.

They can have all the sex they want, there is just no excuse anymore for people to have unwanted children. Dec 4, 2007 at 11:06 am -Susan, you would really report that someone looked distraught? To who, exactly? I see people who looked messed up all day, walking the streets, in the store, but I don’t call anyone. That’s not me being apathetic, that’s me remembering lugging a sick-two-year old to the pharmacy when I had the flu so that I could pick up a prescription while my tire went flat in the parking lot. Had anyone seen me that day, and felt the need to call the police ’cause I looked a bit distraught, I would have slapped them across the face after I changed my tire.
Parents go through shit all the time, the last thing I am thinking is “man, my best friend sure looked like he had his hands full with that newborn this evening. I should call the police ’cause he may set the infant on fire!”
She is a cashier. Not a social worker or psychiatrist. Besides, the woman had never shown any abusive tendencies in the past. She snapped. Hard to stop someone from doing that.

School official accused in abuse
Special education coordinator in Henry County, who is the twin babies’ grandmother, is implicated in case against the parents.
By Kathy Jefcoats
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/01/07
Clayton County police charged the grandmother and parents of 13-month-old twin boys with child abuse after discovering the children weigh less than 10 pounds each —- far below the 27- to 39-pound range for children that age.
The grandmother, Christi Ann Zelek, is the special education coordinator for Henry County schools. Clayton County police Chief Jeff Turner said she is also charged with failing to report the child abuse as state law requires education employees to do.
Zelek was teaching a class on early childhood development at Union Grove High School when Clayton police took her into custody.
“During the interview with police, Christi Zelek told us there was ‘nothing wrong with those children,’ ” said Officer William Clendenen.
The babies are in state custody while receiving medical care at Egleston Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Turner said the boys weigh 8 and 9 pounds.
The weight range for children their age is 27-39 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Zelek and her daughter, Tessa Noel Zelek, and the twins’ father, James Alvin McCart III, both 23, were arrested Thursday.
Turner said Christi Zelek went to the couple’s home at LaCosta Mobile Home Park in Lovejoy Nov. 20 and found the parents passed out and unresponsive. The severely malnourished twins were in another room, Turner said.
Turner said the grandmother deliberately evaded medical services intervention.
“Instead of calling emergency medical services, she called a family member in Fayetteville to come pick up the twins, specifically to keep police and state welfare from discovering the condition of the children,” Turner said Friday. “Then she cleaned up the mobile home before calling emergency medical services for the couple.”
Turner said the young couple was taken to Henry Medical Center, where McCart tested positive for cocaine and remained hospitalized several days. Tessa Zelek refused to take a drug test, he said, and left the hospital within hours, Turner said.
The relative who picked up the twins took them to Egleston hospital that same day.
A friend of that relative is a Clayton County police officer, Turner said, who notified authorities Monday.
Christi Zelek has worked for the Henry County schools since 2000, said schools spokesman Dr. Ethan Hildreth. He said she worked in an administrative capacity and had no direct responsibilities that involved working with students.
Hildreth said he is unsure of what will happen to Zelek’s position with the school system.
“We are just finding out through the media, this is truly breaking news for us,” he said Friday afternoon. “We plan to investigate fully and take the appropriate action.”
Hildreth said policy generally allows for an administrator who is arrested to be placed on leave but that each case is examined individually.
