Given the state of the “remains” I am so impressed by our investigators, the girl behind the artists impresion is pretty spot on. What an awful job this forensic artist had..BUT WOW…how spot on was this artist was to the victim.

I just wanted to give my regards to the forensic artist who had the horrific burde to sketch a human form to this very very sad case.

I cannot even imagine what the law enforcement and the witnesse have had to go thru in a case like this. I hope the fuckers are found and suffer the max and even worse. I am beyond disgust and rage…

this is a beautiful baby why in the world would anyone want to her someone so precious…OMG all of this sickens me to the very core of my being…i know I’m dealing with alot right now and sometimes it’s more than I can handle…but my heart goes out anyways

As much as this case sickens me, Kathy still had me laughing out loud with her brilliant post (5).

Our genetic urge to reproduce gets us into so much trouble. As does our penchant for cute, young things. I find it sad that the beauty of this child is why people react so strongly. If this were an ugly black kid, most people would just shrug.

i have been following this discussion and wanting to post and have finally got around to it. the above link is breaking news on how little Riley died. some people just dont deserve to be parents. she was such a beautiful little girl.

GALVESTON, Texas – A woman believed to be the mother of a 2-year-old whose body was found in Galveston Bay told police she and the girl’s stepfather beat and tortured the child to death, court documents show.

The details in an arrest affidavit paint a chilling picture of the last days of the girl investigators called “Baby Grace” as they worked for weeks to learn her identity.

Investigators are awaiting DNA test results but said Monday they are “fairly confident” that the body a fisherman found in a plastic box Oct. 29 is that of Riley Ann Sawyers. Her mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, and stepfather, Royce Clyde Zeigler II, were arrested early Saturday and are in custody on charges of hurting the girl.

“It was a few weeks ago I held up this little shoe and asked, ‘Who is Baby Grace? Who does this belong to?’” sheriff’s Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said at a news conference. “We’re now fairly confident we know the answer to that.”

Zeigler attempted suicide last week and wrote a note saying, “My wife is innocent of the sins that I committed,” according to the court documents, which were filed Saturday and first reported Monday by Houston television station KTRK.

An autopsy revealed that Riley suffered three skull fractures, but the cause of death has not been determined.

In a statement to police included in the affidavit, Trenor, 19, said she and Zeigler, 24, killed Riley July 24.

The girl was beaten with leather belts, had her head held underwater in a bathtub and then was thrown across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor, Trenor said in the document. She said they kept the body in a storage shed for one to two months before they put it in a plastic bin and dumped it into Galveston Bay.

Trenor said in the document that after her daughter was killed, Zeigler had her forge a document that the Ohio Department of Children’s Services had taken Riley away because of allegations of sexual abuse.

Tuttoilmondo said Trenor had told relatives that someone claiming to be a social worker from Ohio, where Riley’s father lives, took the girl in July.

Trenor’s attorney, Tom Stickler, said she has cooperated with authorities. He declined to comment about her statement to investigators.

“But from what she said, there is no doubt that the girl found is Riley Sawyers,” Stickler said.

Trenor and Zeigler were charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence, Tuttoilmondo said. Bail was set at $350,000 each. The couple’s next court appearance was expected to be scheduled on Tuesday.

Wendell Odom, Zeigler’s attorney, declined to comment on the case except to say Zeigler grew up in Spring, about 75 miles north of Galveston, and works as an instrument technician in the oil industry.

Trenor and Zeigler met a couple of years ago playing an online game, World of Warcraft, and she moved with her daughter from suburban Cleveland to Spring in June, Stickler said.

Riley’s paternal grandmother, Sheryl Sawyers, hadn’t seen her granddaughter in months when she saw a police sketch of “Baby Grace.” Thinking it might be Riley, she called authorities in Texas.

In Mentor, Ohio, on Monday, Sawyers wiped away tears at a news conference and held up the Elmo doll she had already bought Riley for Christmas.

“It’s hard to think that I’ll never see her again,” she said.

The Sawyers family’s attorney, Laura DePledge, said they take comfort in knowing that the girl is “resting peacefully and is no longer subject to abuse.”

DePledge said Trenor and Sawyers’ son, Robert Sawyers, also of Mentor, had been high school sweethearts. Sheryl Sawyers said she has not seen Riley since the girl and Trenor moved to Texas.

Robert Sawyers, who works in an auto-parts store, was never married to Trenor but lived with her and their daughter in his parents’ home for about two years. He and Trenor split up after March 31, when he was charged with domestic violence against her.

DePledge said there was insufficient evidence to support the charge, which was reduced to disorderly conduct. Robert Sawyers is now married and has a 3-month-old son.

Riley “had a very big imagination for such a little girl,” he said of his daughter. “She could play with anything and have fun with it.”

I honestly don’t understand this. Its not like it was just one angry twisted person that got there rocks off by torturing a little girl. . . it was one angry twisted person and the mother. She participated. And it wasn’t like it was one act of beating or drowning, out of sudden anger and rage like so many childrens deaths. They systematicly beat and abused her.I just can’t grasp how someone could hurt an innocent child. I too, would like to know what they were thinking. Yeah Kathy there would be a class for both males and females. But do you think the Bible thumpers would allow such a class? I think there are far more important things than reading writing, etc. and unfortunately parents today are more focused on their jobs and obviously their private parts to raise responsible children. Boys are awful today it seems as far as going to college or getting a good job, they seem to rely on their parents. One strike and your out is how it should go, but most people are just so needy that they will hook up with the first person who knocks on their door. This poor girl, why the hell did her mom not leave her with her dad? Why would he let her take his daughter out of state? Why did he not fight her on this? There is no way in hell I would have let her leave with my child, guys come on we have rights too. That is the one thing that I would like to know. Why the hell he was allowed her to leave with this little girl to meet some guy she met online and no one called the cops on her or took her to court to stop her from taking this little girl. March 30, 2007: Robert Sawyers is arrested for domestic violence after Trenor calls police and says he grabbed her throat because she parked in his space in the driveway.

Just wondering, will the Grandmother Sawyer receive the $20,000 reward offered by the FBI?

I sure as hell hope so. I read in one of the papers, that Robert Sawyers was gonna set up a fund, so he can raise the funds to bury Riley.

What better way for this reward to be used, than to give Riley a beautiful farewell.

Has anyone noticed, that there have no reports of statements from Kimberly’s parents nor Royce’s either.

Another thought. The family lived with Robert’s parents. Would you not think that they would have noticed the abuse if it took place in their own home. Maybe at that time it wasn’t physical abuse but verbal abuse. Needless to say, if that were the case, I am shocked that they did not prevent the mom from taking her to Texas, on those terms. Also, I believe that Robert could have stopped Kim and Riley from leaving the area, regarding child support rules, etc…. (CNN) — A man in the medical examiner’s office pushed back the cheeks on Baby Grace’s corpse to put a smile on her tiny, decaying face. That’s how forensic artist Lois Gibson captured the open-mouthed grin with spangled risotto-sized teeth. It was one of the girl’s few features that had survived six weeks in a shed during a Texas summer and nearly two months in Galveston Bay.

Forensic artist Lois Gibson created a nearly perfect portrait of Riley Ann Sawyers’ face.

But it was the way the blond toddler looked outside of the black body bag that made Gibson draw large, lid-filling eyes on the picture of the girl that led to identifying Riley Ann Sawyers.

“She was so very, very small. She looked like the size of a child that you would change the diaper on, just laying there on a metal gurney like a giant stainless steel cookie sheet,” Gibson says just above a sad, disbelieving whisper before her voice shifts and she’s strong and scientific. “If you are very, very small, then the iris, that colored part of your eye, takes up almost the entire eye opening.”

The corpse’s decay helped Gibson perfect the gentle downward slope of Riley’s eyes. “The decomposition was such that I could see that bone on her face,” she said. “And her eyebrows were going to follow her little ridge.”

Gibson said she felt her blood pressure rising during her morgue visit. It passed quickly, she said, and “I turned into the artist. I was going to make the best picture possible and get every piece of anatomy right and find her name and get justice for her.” In spite of what lay on the gurney, Gibson said, “I knew that she was beautiful, and the picture would reach out to people who knew her and loved her.” Video Watch what the sketch artist has to say about the case »

And it did. Five days after the release of Gibson’s precise post-mortem sketch, Riley’s grandmother in Ohio recognized the sweet face and contacted police.

It’s the kind of result police hope for when they summon one of the handful of forensic artists across the nation who can re-create the faces of maimed, burned and decaying bodies. Gibson spent what she described as just “three intense minutes” with Riley’s body that day. It was all she needed. It was all she could take.

But it was decades of research that help her nail the image.

A trained artist can look at a skull and immediately tell the race and gender of a corpse. And that’s the beginning of giving a name to the unknown.

“If you turn the skull of a white male sideways, it’s almost like a truck hit it. It’s just straight up and down flat,” said Marla Lawson, a renowned forensic artist who works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. “The forehead protrudes very little and the chin sinks in. But for African-Americans, they slightly slope at the forehead and they protrude slightly at the mandible and they have these great cheekbones. Their skulls weigh more than white people’s skulls, and their teeth will be whiter and brighter usually.”

An Asian person’s skull will have a wider facial area, Lawson said, but people of Hispanic descent are more challenging because the structures are nearly identical to Caucasians.

But determining male and female is easy, said Lawson who created the first, and dead-on, likeness of Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph while he was a fugitive. Run your fingers vertically over your eyebrows. Males feel a defined ridge under the brow line. A woman’s face is smoother.

There are other clues about structures on a person’s head. The size and direction of that really hard bone just behind the ear holds clues about whether earlobes are attached or not, said Suzanne Birdwell, who works for the Texas Department of Public Safety. And those orbits, the openings in a skull where eyes belong, are not all the same in spite of their run-of-the-mill appearance.

“Some part of it will be slanted and that will tell you which way tears ducts would have drained and that tells you where to start the corner of the eye,” Birdwell said.

Anthropologists spent years taking measurements from various cadavers — male, female, chubby, emaciated, short, young, old, Asian, Latino, black, white. They’ve compiled those measurements in how the depth from skin surface to bone differs based on all those factors for 21 different spots on a face and placed those averages in a chart. Forensic artists use those measurements to determine how much flesh and contour to put on a skull to create a bust or make a sketch.

Frank Bender worked on a case very similar to Riley’s in the early 1980′s. Bender helped identify Aliyah Davis. Like Riley, she was beaten to death, tossed into a steamer trunk and then dumped under a bridge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Bender says the best reconstructionists know how to combine science and art because depth charts are limiting. “Facial thickness charts do not make the person. They will give you a gross, generic likeness because they are taken from averages and every person is an individual,” he said.

Charts would have failed him when he worked on a case in New York. The front of the skull was gone — no orbits to determine the slope of eyelids, no hole in the middle to give clues about where the nose would have been or its shape and no upper jaw to hint at lip and mouth shape. But with something that resembled an empty bowl, Bender made a face. The exact face.

He used shapes from the back of the head to determine what kind of face would match the back of that skull. “It’s harmony of form,” said Bender who is a fine artist by trade. “It’s no different than composing a piece music or orchestrating a dance.”

Gibson used similar artistic license in painting the case-solving portrait of Riley. Along with the saddening visit to the morgue, Gibson used autopsy photos and pictures of the clothes and shoes on the body.

“I had to go to the morgue to see her in person. I saw how her hair fell to the middle of her back. She looked a lot like my little girl at that age,” Gibson said. “I took out a picture of my baby girl playing on the floor with toys at that same age and I drew my daughter’s body in that position. And I drew the clothing of the dead girl on that body and I put Baby Grace’s face on that body.”

Gibson captured the downward slope of Riley’s eyes and the tiny nose with the bulbous tip. “I knew I had to do this right for that little girl,” Gibson said. “I only get one chance, and I want to help helpless victims. How much more helpless can you be when you’re 2, and you’re dead.”

Im a typical no emotion, keep it all in, I can handle anything type of guy. But when the news of this broke….it took my breath away. I can tell you it wrenches my soul to know that I live in Spring and this happened possibly mere miles from my home. Does anyone know where in Spring they lived?

Kimberly’s Father breaks silence ~

MENTOR — They say they warned their daughter not to move to Texas prior to the murder of baby Riley
Kimberly Trenor’s father, stepmother and their best friends want the world to know that the 19 year old murder suspect is not a monster.

Despite the happy prom pictures taken last year at Mentor High School, they claim Robert Sawyers, the baby’s father was abusive towards Trenor.

Kimberly wanted to get away from Sawyers and met a new lover, Royce Zeigler, on the internet playing “Worlds of Warcraft”.

But when Randy and Patty Trenor found out she was planning to move to Texas to join Zeigler, her parents were worried something bad would happen.

I told her you shouldn’t go down”, recalls her father, Randy. “I told her I think you are making a mistake. But I couldn’t stop her because she was over 18 and she made her own decisions. I couldn’t stop her.”

Step-mother, Patty Trenor added, “people are making us into horrible persons. They say we should have stopped her and we should have prevented it. But how could we stop her from going?”

Family friends describe Kimberly as quiet, reserved and unwilling to let the outside world know about her troubles.

Once she moved to Spring, Texas, they believe Kimberly was living in fear of her new husband, Royce Zeigler.

Long time family friend, Annie Frost and her husband, Fred, are devastated by the death of Riley.

“It’s out of her character because she’s not like that,” said Fred Frost. “She was raised in a good household. I mean Patty and Randy love her to pieces. And there’s no way it’s Kimberly. No way!”

“It’s possible she was part of this, even if it was just covering up,” added Annie. “But you don’t know what she might have been doing out of fear.”

But Kim’s parents admit that she lied to them about the baby last summer. She kept telling them that Riley was playing or sleeping whenever they called to talk to their granddaughter.

Today the couple has tears but no answers. The murder suspect’s father wants her to answer some simple questions.

“I want her to tell me,” said Trenor,”why did you do that? Why did you lie to me on the phone?”

Wiping back tears, family friend Annie Frost said, “Kimberly is all alone down there. There’s no one there for her.”

Perhaps the more important question is, who was there for the little blonde child, Riley Sawyers?

This entire story just makes me want to puke. It’s unfathomable how anyone could be so evil. From the mugshots, even my 13 year old says they look like they’re strung out on meth or heroine or something. Here’s what REALLY eats at me, though…. I have a blonde haired, blue eyed little girl born a whopping 10 DAYS before Riley! She is exactly the same age and size as Riley. Every time I look at her, I think of Riley and just cannot understand what kind of INHUMAN MONSTER could do these things to someone so small and helpless. Someone who has no concept of hate or evil. I take comfort in knowing that justice will be served. Whether they know it or not, these two have already gotten a death sentence. We had a family friend who worked in the prison system years and years ago. He told us once that there is nothing convicted criminals hate more than a child killer. So, if they don’t get the death penalty in the courtroom, they’ll certainly get it in the courtyard! I hope they’re tortured for 14 hours before they die, just like they did to Riley!

I don’t see how anyone – INCLUDING Kim’s parents can defend her in any way. She admitted beating Riley with one of the belts. She was a very active participant. Breaking News: Local Memorial in place for Baby Riley Ann Sawyers
11/28/2007

Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Mentor,Ohio has erected a cross for area residents to pay tribute to 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers.

Riley, from Mentor, was reportedly killed in Spring, Texas, shortly after her mother moved her there this spring. Her mother and stepfather have been arrested in connection with her death.

Riley’s body is not expected to be released from Texas authorities for at least two weeks. But the funeral home, located at 8466 Mentor Ave., has erected a cross with Riley’s picture so residents here can pay their respects to the blonde-haired little girl.

In addition, Riley will be remembered at Brunner Funeral Home’s annual Tree of Remembrance Service at 1 p.m. Sunday on the lawn at 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.

I do and don’t believe in the death penalty. If it is an open and shut case like this and Rowan than yes these fuckers need to die and not 10 years from now, but if the case is hard to prove and there is dought than no, because a lot of people who had done nothing have been put to death. Just look at the case of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echold is on death row and they had no physical evidence to like him or the others to the crime.
In Rileys and Rowans case I would personallly pull the switch on their killers.

Kristi, with all due respect. You are wrong. Go on the website for the National Center for Missing and Exploited children. Look at ALL the minority children. How many of them have you heard of…EVER?

Also, go to CNN.com and Foxnews. How long did Rowan stay on the front pages? A day or two maybe. When she was missing, it was only local, when the horror of what actually happened to her came up, it was national, but only for a little while.

Now look for details on Riley’s case. Still up there huh? Right on the front page.

While we can’t control what the media chooses to leave up or take down – All children are equally important to me. I don’t care if they are poka-dotted. All of these cases are heinous and I personnally can’t see anything but the words death or abuse of a child – that’s as far as I get on the race issue. As someone else just mentioned above, there was a small story today about them finding the body of a college student who’d been missing in Florida, and I’d never heard of her. She was black. When Baby Grace washed up, that portrait was splashed across the front page of every on-line news source in the nation. When a black child disappears, it usually is covered as a small paragraph in Section B of the local press.

The one blonde / white girl mystery which has amazed me because it disappeared from the press is the case of Jodi Parrack up in MI. There has just been absolute silence on that one, and it’s a very curious case. The police just say they are confident they’ll make an arrest soon. Other than that…not a peep from ANYONE.

I think that maybe we are both correct to a degree. Yes you are right, I have seen the list of the black children missing but not forgotten. But did you also see the list of blond hair/blue eyed little girls specifically between the ages of 2-3 that was being investigated for a match to baby Grace?

The number of missing children (of all races) is horrifying! But I’ll tell you that I have not heard of about 95% of them. Infact, when I found this site I was appauled at what I was seeing and if you recall my posts from the very begining here it took some convincing by Morbid for me to really grasp that the numbers for these violent crimes and missing childern are not actually increasing, just more reported. Even so I didn’t know about 90% of these stories until coming here.

Actually every single time I turn on my computer CNN comes up as my home page. And truthfully I saw much more of what happened with Rowan than I have for Riley. There was some on Baby Grace and Some on Riley. But now both are gone, unless you begin searching for past articles.

I am sure the local news covers these events for longer, but me living in Southern California, if the story is not near it comes and goes very quickly once they determine the offenders have been caught. The missing and unknown seem last a bit longer, but eventually they move on too. And I agree that is an absolute shame!!! I still however don’t believe that the race of a child makes people feel differently about what has happened to them.

I will agree with you however that those who are wealthier are able to keep the stories in the lime light for a longer period of time. But I don’t believe it has to do directly with their race. It has to do with the fact that they have more money so can take longer periods of time off of work to create awarness or to travel to DC and such places. As in the case of Madelaine McCann. Her parents are Physicians and have the money to spend time doing the things they have done to keep her case in the forefront, it’s not because she is a white/blond little girl. Unfortunately those not as wealthy do not have that luxury. I agree that’s not fair or just, but the way it is.

You are fooling yourself if you do not believe that color determines the type of media coverage a case receives, regardless of whether or not it is child related or burglary. We could start a whole ‘nother thread on this-I would like to think however that the detectives in Galveston would have been so moved and held up a shoe if the container held a child of darker skin…I have to believe this myself or it will make me crazy.

If you watch the press conference video that is the baby and mother in the center room of the room – she looks like a great mother.

Believe, I choose to agree with you and can’t imagine that the color of that little body would have made an ounce of difference. However I am not fooling myself and I am not blind, deaf or dumb. There are certain aspects of the media that are and have been color biased for a long time. But not in the case of abused and missing children, and that’s what I am talking about here, they all matter the same, and I don’t see a difference in the media. Maybe it’s because of where I live, but I just don’t.

As far as color discrimination in the media, I also believe it’s getting better, as is evident by the headlines on CNN today.

Lets just say Riley walked in front of the tv while he played video games. He grabbed her not realizing his strenght and Kimberly said Hey be nice! Then 30 min later she did it again and he smacked her with the leather belt. Kimberly screams at him cussing him out and maybe he hits Kimberly knocks her around some and she can’t deal with her daughter cause she is busy fighting with him. Kimberly took her outside or laid her down for a nap. She comes in from playing with her doll that does the pee thing and made a water pile on the floor. So he holds her head under water. How much you going to take before you do something to stop it.

This had to be building in the prior days. Opened the frigerator without saying please. (not saying a two year can) maybe spilling cereal on the floor Right !!! How about the 10 mins the day(s) before – She had to feel that it was wrong to punish a child of that age the way he describe (expected) her too – that is why he choose to stay home from work.

I suppose I feared the law and smart enough not to risk going to jail – I couldn’t handle the pressure being away from my child(ren) killing someone is not an option either unless of course it was witnessed as self defense but if it is was my word against his or left in the hands of the law enforcers which I don’t have lots of faith in. These people make me sick … they had thousands of people combing the miles of ground searching in bushes garbage cans you name it.

those people really need burned when they involve manpower from all other when they could be working on more important cases.

DNA confirms Sawyers is ‘Baby Grace’

GALVESTON — DNA test results have confirmed that the body found in West Galveston Bay on Oct. 29 is that of 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers, Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff’s office said.

The girl’s father, 20-year-old Robert Sawyers of Mentor, Ohio, gave investigators a DNA sample Nov. 14 after his mother tipped off investigators that his daughter might be the girl only then known as “Baby Grace.”

On Nov. 23, the girl’s mother, 19-year-old Kimberly Dawn Trenor, gave a statement to investigators implicating herself and her husband, Royce Clyde Zeigler, 24, in the child’s death, according to investigators. She also gave her DNA sample.

With Baby Grace’s identity confirmed, District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk will consider upgrading the charges filed against the girl’s mother and stepfather, Tuttoilmondo said.

Trenor and Zeigler were charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence on Nov. 24. They’re being held on bonds of $350,000 each.

Sheryl Sawyers testified today, too! She had sent an email to Riley with a picture of her new half brother, on the day she was found.

“I have attached a picture of your new stepbrother Braden Michael Sawyers,” Sheryl Sawyers wrote. “Hopefully your mother will let you see it. I miss you Riley, and love you very much and hope to see you soon. Love and Kisses . Grandma Sawyers.”

The email is dated October 29th 2007. Riley was found in that box on that island that very same night.
