Evidence will be released today in the Gary Michael Hilton murder case, said Georgia Cappleman, chief assistant state attorney for the 2nd Judicial District.

Hilton is facing the death penalty on a charge of first-degree murder in the 2007 killing of Crawfordville resident Cheryl Dunlap.

Both the prosecution and defense have sought to keep closed pre-trial evidence that they say could prejudice a jury. The judge in the case has ordered that some information in the documents be released.

Cappleman said the documents, which contain information that has been redacted, will be released this afternoon.

She said the pre-trial evidence includes property receipts and lab results.

Hilton, who is being held in the Leon County Jail, is serving a life sentence for the January 2008 murder of Georgia resident Meredith Emerson, and he’s a suspect in the killing of a North Carolina couple.

I’m so sorry, Cheryl.

That’s it. I’ve had it. I’m gonna write a big old long blog post on Gary Michael Hilton and Cheryl Dunlap and his many other victims, and in the end you’ll be as outraged about the Leon County law enforcement and justice system community’s shenanigans as I am.

But it will take me some time to write that post because I’m mad. So mad my teeth are clenched and I can’t unclench them.

Even when I write that blog post I won’t be able to tell you precisely how my high-school classmate was murdered, or precisely when, or how long she was tortured beforehand.

Two years later, and none of that stuff has come out. They say it would “inflame the community.”

I say the community is inflamed that the court system continues to keep under lock and key the details of who, what, when, where, why and how the crime was committed.

And investigated. That’s what they really don’t want us to see. What a botched job they did of investigating this, and saving Cheryl.

I started out as a rational, dispassionate reporter in the beginning of this case. Just curious about what happened to my friend, in my hometown. A lot of personal interest, nothing much more.

As the years have marched on, and we’re nowhere closer to knowing what happened exactly to Cheryl than we were Dec. 1, 2007, when she went missing, I have become more and more agitated about the secrecy.

Then I started investigating on my own. And I found many things that troubled me. Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell bungled this case. State Attorney Willie Meggs has bungled this case. Leon Circuit Judge Terry Lewis has bungled this case.

And I began to realize that this case is being left sealed not because the public would be inflamed about the details of Cheryl’s murder, but because they would be inflamed at how their public safety officials failed to keep Cheryl, and them, safe.

The Campers that eye witnessed the items from the cache told me they saw the dog bones in a chest. It is plausible that they arrived at the campsite as the items were being loaded up for shipping to FDLE.

If the dog was tied to the tree, it would indicate that GMH was definitely headed back to the campsite/staging area in Fannin County after abducting Meredith Hope Emerson. It would raise many other questions:

Who did the dog belong too? Was the owner an unknown victim prior to Meredith Hope Emerson, and after the failed attempt to abduct Nancy Linguish at Blood Mtn. on 12/31/07?

The temperature on 01/01/08 was in the single digits and the winds were described as blizzard conditions. Did the dog, leased to the tree, freeze to death in the frigid temps or die from starvation due to GMH’s absence?

I was under the impression that GMH used the pellet guns for driving away unwanted stray dogs.

Whose clothes(29 articles of clothing)were found in the campsite/staging area? How many more caches of clothes are located in his many other sites in GA and other States over decades?

Judge in Hilton case takes up pretrial evidence closure, trial dates

An attorney for the Tallahassee Democrat continued to press for release of documents in the Gary Michael Hilton murder case during a pretrial hearing Friday in Leon Circuit Court.

Meanwhile, prosecutors and defense attorneys couldn’t agree on a trial date for Hilton, charged with first-degree murder in the 2007 slaying of Crawfordville resident Cheryl Dunlap.

Leon Circuit Judge Terry Lewis earlier this year approved the release of discovery materials in the case with the condition that details that the prosecution or defense thought could prejudice a jury would be redacted.

Michael Glazer, attorney for the Tallahassee Democrat, argued that the public has a right to see the documents before the trial, just as they typically do in criminal proceedings. He said attorneys who have sought to keep pretrial evidence closed haven’t done a good job of “policing themselves.”

“What’s important about this deals with the public’s right of access,” he said. “This is not about the Democrat. This about the public’s right.”

The Tallahassee Democrat filed a motion to obtain the pretrial evidence and challenge the closure of any information that’s customarily released.

Assistant Public Defender Ines Suber said she was strongly opposed to the release of pretrial evidence and criticized previous news articles that detailed elements of the case.

“They had the nerve to do their own investigation and were harassing witnesses,” Suber said of reporters. “No one was there to say you don’t have to talk.”

Lewis instructed the prosecution and defense to go through records in the case and highlight information they feel should be kept closed. Both sides will meet again with Lewis in an Oct. 23 hearing to discuss pretrial document closure. Lewis will make the final decision on which records should be released.

On the trial-date issue, Suber said she wouldn’t be ready to go to trial until 2011 because of the number of witnesses and amount of evidence in the case. However, Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman said she saw no reason why the trial couldn’t begin in the spring.

Lewis told both sides he wants to set a trial date during the Oct. 23 hearing.
“2011 seems like an awful long time to get ready,” Lewis said, adding that, “If you have a lot of witnesses, you want to lock them on a trial date.”

He called me in 1982 when I was living in another state. He had gotten my phone number from a family member in Miami by telling them he was someone else, representing a fictitious company and needed to get in touch with me. We spoke briefly and I hung up on him because he seemed to be talking very strangely. I had no contact with him after that.

I have been contacted by the Public Defenders office in Tallahassee, therefore I do not intend to say anything in detail here that could possibly affect any potential testimony I might have to give at a later date.

He set two gallon jugs of gasoline in the carport of the Green family home with 2 strings leading up the driveway where he sat in his “BLACK CAMERO” ( A NEW CAR TO ADD TO THE LIST OF HIS VEHICLES) then set the strings on fire. They, Ms. Green and her family (her sister and brother) members heard a noise ran out of the house and were able to put out the fire with a hose. It happened at 0001 hours. When Hilton was driving off he hit a parked car, thus the hit & run charge. One of the young ladies in the Green family had dated Hilton a few times, but broke it off. That was in Feb. 1982. In May, 2 weeks before the fire on May 28, 1982 he started calling to harass her asking if she wanted to make some money prostituting for him. She said he sounded like he had eaten a few ludes and she hung up on him. He was arrested on First Degree Arson charges and booked into Dekalb County jail. He lived at the time at 5135 West Mountain St. #A-17, Stone Mountain, GA. The report indicates the Green’s signed statements that they knew who the arsonist was and could positively identify him as Hilton, but I guess he just found a way to talk his way out of it or the girls were just too afraid of him and what he might do next.

Case #82-103081 & #82-103082, the report ends with case is closed and cleared, pending criminal prosecution. Hilton signed for a copy of the report on June 11, 1982.

JACKSON, Ga. — A hunter accidentally found camping supplies, clothes and books belonging to convicted killer Gary Michael Hilton in the Chattahoochee National Forest, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

It happened last Friday at a concealed campsite…

Hilton also is suspected in the slayings of an elderly North Carolina couple — Irene Bryant, 84, and her husband, John Bryant, 80. Officials said the Bryants disappeared while hiking in the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville. Irene Bryant had been beaten to death. John Bryant’s skeletal remains were found in Feb. 2008.

The GBI turned over the items to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Officials have contacted the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation and are investigating whether items can be tied to the Bryants’ killings.

More Info About Hilton Emerging

More information is emerging about Gary Hilton and the time he spent after allegedly kidnapping Meredith Emerson.

Thursday, while at a Pickens County Huddle House, Hilton called his former boss, John Tabor.

“He said he needed some money to get started,” Tabor said. “So I told him I would leave a check for him at the office on Clairmont Road for him to retrieve the following day, Friday.”

What Gary Hilton didn’t know when he called Tabor was that Tabor had already called the GBI about Hilton. Tabor said he called the GBI as soon as he heard that Meredith Emerson was missing from the hiking trail on Blood Mountain in Union County. Tabor knew Hilton camped in the wilderness there, and based on what he knew of Hilton, suspected Hilton might be the one who kidnapped Emerson.

So Tabor had already given the GBI Hilton’s name, van description and license tag numbers. Right after Hilton called Tabor, Tabor called the GBI again, and the GBI raced to the Huddle House, trying to catch up to Hilton and Emerson.

Hilton worked for Tabor’s siding business, Insulated Wall Systems, on and off for ten years. In fact the office on Clairmont Road in DeKalb County was listed as Hilton’s suspected address on his initial kidnapping warrant. at a Huddle House restaurant on Highway 53 in Pickens County.

What neither Tabor nor workers at the Huddle House restaurant on Highway 53 in Pickens County could have known when Hilton picked up the phone was that Meredith Hope Emerson, was alive and restrained inside Hilton’s van in the restaurant parking lot.

The GBI said Hilton killed Emerson the next day in Dawson County, one day after calling his former boss to plan his future.

“That was the last contact I had from Gary Hilton,” Tabor said. “And apparently when they picked him up, he was en-route to get that check.”

Tabor said he wants Meredith Emerson’s family to know that he did everything he could to help police catch Hilton and save Meredith.

Tabor is out of state and expects to return home to Metro Atlanta in a few days. He said he never really intended to re-hire Hilton, after a falling out they had last year. He is grieving along with the people at the Huddle House, wondering and agonizing over what more they could have done.

At approximately 4:40 pm., HILTON again contacted TABER on TABER’s cellular telephone. This number was 770-894-4684. TABER did not know where this telephone was located. TABER just stated that the reception was much better. TABER stated that HILTON wanted to borrow money from TABER. HILTON stated that he had gotten his life in order and had turned things around and wanted to come back to work for TABER. HILTON stated he would need approximately seven hundred dollars or eight hundred dollars to get his driver’s license and tags renewed. HILTON had wanted TABER to leave a check at TABER’s business in Decatur. HILTON advised he would come pick it up either that evening or the next date.
TABER further advised that HILTON had used a cellular telephone that had been purchased for TABER’s business. TABER’s business was in construction and HILTON was a “laborer”. HILTON had used the telephone up until late September or early October of 2007. The telephone number had been transferred to another telephone. That
. number was inactive on the phone that he had given HILTON. No further information was obtained at this time.

My heart an prayers go out for Cheryl Dunlap, and her family.
Gary Michael Hilton, will die in prison of natural causes. His life expectancy is 74 years old. By pursuing the Death Penalty, GMH, although undeserving, is affordaded special priveliges and accomodations in prison, security, and legal representation denied other suspects.
GMH & Associates, have been doing their deeds for decades. Forty seven years according to him.
GMH, had no victim profile; 11 year old Levi Frady(GA) to 84 year Old Irene Bryant(NC). Many have been suspected for his evil deeds due to the stranger on stranger nature of his abductions. Many of his inocent victims vanished without a trace and will never be identified, providing their families closure.
GMH’s only fear is ‘Federal SuperMax’. Since many of his known victims were abducted and tragically murdered on Fed Land, this would be an excellent negotiating tool for seeking the truth: did he have Associates? Who are his many other victims and what is their location?
