Nov 30, 2007 at 5:25 pm -Kristi - I too stand by my opinions - but Janice cannot help it. And to your comment of: Clearly parents have a tremendous amount of influence on how their children will turn out, however it is NOT the deciding factor. There are pleanty of good parents in the world who have a child that turns out bad, and the same goes for pleanty of bad parents whose children will be fortunate enough to turn out good. Colleen set the basis for who Janice would become, but ultimately Janice decided how she would live her life. And to reflect on her own comments, that she is doing it differently than her mother and making it better for her children proves my point.
I couldn’t agree more. But what we must be mindful of, is the fact poor Janice is suffering too. While we don’t have to change our minds, as I have not either, I do feel it is in good taste to limit our comments about Colleen for two reasons #1 we have already beat the dead horse to death and #2 I don’t want to add to Janice’s pain.

Nov 30, 2007 at 5:48 pm -Oh Pooh, believe me I know that Janice cannot help it and I am fully aware that she is suffering. My comments were a response and discussion to Morbid’s post, not to continue beating the already dead and trampled horse.
I also do not wish to add to Janice’s pain which is why I chose my words carefully and tried to be as tactful as possible. And decided to comment what I did because Morbid was pretty sure Janice would not be returning though I sure wish she would.
I am not actually sure that there is much left at all to be said in this case that hasn’t already been said over and over, atleast until some new information is uncovered. But we all stay to talk about it anyhow cause for the most part I think it makes us feel somewhat better to talk about it.

Nov 30, 2007 at 6:34 pm -Solange and JustaMOM2 (which by the way is clearly not an appropriate name for you after what I have read here, maybe RockstarMOM would be more fitting) you are both Rockstars in my book for standing up and taking a stand and making a difference. As weird as this may sound, I have to admit I feel somewhat jealous. You have no idea how I wish I had the time to participate in a program such as CASA. I had never heard of such a thing until here. And it sounds as if it really can and does make a difference.
Unfortunatley I work full-time in the medical field and do not have set hours that would afford me the luxury of a regular volunteer type job in addition. And when I am not working I spend every waking second with my little girl who it literally my earth, sun and moon!
I know myself and if I were took get involved with something like CASA I would have trouble not letting it consume me. But “RockstarMOM”
Do you know know if they do accept people to help here and there when they can or is it something that really requires more of a time commitment?

Nov 30, 2007 at 7:40 pm -Being that Colleen put her own self in a situation
where to be raped not just once but twice
It just seem to make a statement lacking self esteem or respect for herself
In order to love someone else you have to love yourself first ?
I believe that Janice may have turned out so mature and well is that she was the first child and possibly had brothers and Ariann to set example too as she grew out
Usually don’t most with their first child attempt to do everything perfect by the book
just like filling in the babybook and as the more kids you have you start becoming more less organized. for example when you have more baby pictures of the older child then the younger ones.

Nov 30, 2007 at 7:51 pm -Thanks you believer wished you lived near me ! maybe you do
for a matter of fact for about 8 years now we prepare food on christmas eve morning and cook and serve to the homeless on Christmas morning we are usually back home before 11 both days we are there with the scouts.
My son did 143 volunteer hours over the summer, he don’t drive so I was there too but occassionly I could drop him off and pick up later. He sold Rubber ducks in car dealer ship parking lots gave free ones out for those that test drive new cars. They race the ducks down a shute in the river on Labor and give a way a Honda. They have 1/3333 ducks marked with a million dollars if one of those reaches first they get the money so far they havent had a million dollar winner yet only cars. they wish to have one the money is donated by national city bank. In 2006 the winner was from california and donated the car right back to the agency.
during the week they took phone calls people would phone their donations and purchases and they wash clean put the number labels on them etc. and they did have booths at festivals around town he worked at them too He loved doing it and plans on doing it next year.
The money all went to the freestore food pantry

Nov 30, 2007 at 10:59 pm -5:30 p.m. Mother of murdered girl files for divorce
Colleen Spears, the mother of the late Rowan Ford, 9, has filed for divorce with her husband and one of Ford’s accused killers, David W. Spears, according to on-line court records.
Colleen Spears has filed for divorce. Sadly, a bit too late. Here’s the story:
http://www.joplinglobe.com/loc.....83519.html
Colleen Spears, of Stella, could not immediately be reached for comment this evening. She is being represented by Neosho attorney Aaron Farber in the case, on-line court records show.
David Spears, 25, and his friend, Chris Collings, 32, each face charges of first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape in connection to Ford’s abduction, alleged sexual assault and murder early Nov. 3.

I can’t say I’ve ‘enjoyed’ reading here, exactly, as the topics are horrific. But I do appreciate Morbid’s intelligent, analytical, and sometimes-very-funny approach to the topics at hand. Anyway, that’s what’s kept me coming back each day…. we’ll see how long I have the stomach for it.

Dec 1, 2007 at 12:38 pm -I looked into CASA where I live and it was interesting because they are many “chapters” or “divisions” I guess and many of them stated that they currently have no opportunities for volunteers at this time. I found that odd considering how many children there must be that would be in need of an advocate. But anyhow I did find the following info for one not too far away;
One must be atleast 21, have a California driver’s license, a car and car insurance,

Dec 1, 2007 at 12:42 pm -sorry, premature submission…
One must be atleast 21, have a California driver’s license, a car and car insurance, pass a background clearance, complete 30 hours of training, and be sworn in by the presiding juvenile court judge. Child Advocates of San Bernardino County also asks for an 18 month commitment.
I am not sure if the requirements are the same accross the board, but does that sound about right to you “justamom”?

Dec 2, 2007 at 11:30 pm -I am not sure if he would technically HAVE to go to court or not, unless he plans to contest it, which under the circumstances will be stupid on his part. My ex didnt show and he lost by default. They shared no children, and doubtful they had any major shared property. I imagine that since his attorney is public defender that wont cover divorce unless his lawyer Paul is gonna cover this one. I imagine he will let it go and not appear. And I imagine that the judge won’t risk transferring him for it either since it would be in Newton County. But a little target practice in his direction wouldnt be a BAD idea.

You have shown great “word picking” and tact since you were aware of Janice’s presence. Again, only resounding the message, not directed to any one person and especially not you. Dec 4, 2007 at 3:59 pm -My heart goes out to Rowan’s family. As stated on an earlier blog., my family has gone through this same tragedy. The only difference in our scenario is that there has not been anyone arrested for the murder of Dannarriah Finley, so whoever did this awful crime is still at large. Probably the biggest bombshell of all is that the family was not told of any sexual abuse before hand. We had it dropped on us like an atomic bomb at a news conference. On this one, impqueen,I am making a point because the monster that killed Dannarriah is still at large.

Dec 4, 2007 at 11:41 pm -a guy came in the store today who works at the Barry County Jail and said that there are a total of 13 pedophiles in jail down there, including David and Chris. More than there has ever been. Not all are in there for that crime, but have that in their history. Said that everyone hates David and Chris and are not treating them overly wonderfully. Nothing that can be deemed as abuse, but no favors either. He said that he personally hates them and has to do all he can not to draw his gun and fire on them everytime he has to deal with them. Said there is a lot of details that have not been let out to the public that would make people sick if they knew them, but will likely come out in trial. Said that all the cops involved in this case are really having a hard time of it.

Dec 5, 2007 at 12:27 am -He didnt say, other than to say conditions of the body. Said that it would come out in the trial. I dont know. I wish I did. Things are getting quiet about the whole ordeal so I dont know any more what it going on. I do know that they still dont have a public defender for Collings. Wonder if its because no one wants the case. Can a public defender refuse to take the case? I think he wouldnt have said as much as he did if he wasnt a regular and prone to gabbiness. But he said that all the cops are having trouble dealing with it. If they are harboring so much hatred against them its a wonder there hasnt been an “accident” yet. But then Barry County cops are already in trouble for an altercation where they tazered a mentally ill woman. 3 county and 3 city cops were fired, so I think that is the only reason they are not doing more. I think it will be hard to find an impartial jury so they are really keeping things hush-hush. Next time the guy comes in the store I will try to see if I can find out more.

As far as details- once the trial is over,IF-they get the death penalty,it will be on missourinet. They have vivid descriptions of the crimes of all death row inmates.
I don’t know how much of it will be on casenet.

Dec 5, 2007 at 12:32 am -Yeah, thanks for the info.
Anybody have any idea when a trial will come, or when more info will be released? I assume the sickening details are coming from thier testimonies.
If the rape was so brutal, it suggests they might have known they were going to kill her, rather than something that ‘got out of hand’.
Earlier I speculated that Chris was more responsible for Rowan’s death, and have since thought perhaps David was.
I’m really anxious to know what happened.

Dec 5, 2007 at 12:40 am -I would say..months,years even, depending on where its tried. They would probably be better off busing in a jury from somewhere else than trying to move the case to another place, cost wise. I’ve seen that happen on tv, I don’t know if its very true to life.
The farthest they could go would be like..St.Joe-that would be NE vs SW.
But I think it will take awhile.

Dec 5, 2007 at 6:07 am -Misterman: “On this one, impqueen,I am making a point because the monster that killed Dannarriah is still at large.”
I have no issue with that. In fact, not that it matters what i think, any exposure Dannarriah’s case can get is good. My only issue on the Megan thread was that you appeared to me to be invoking the “my cousin was a murder victim” to back up your argument and misspelled her name, which I see you have now corrected.
But The Interwebs, it gets a lot of posers, so you can understand why I might have been a little suspicious. Then you said you’d only bring up Dannarriah’s name to “wake up other parents”, which is kind of a silly rule that you made up and really had nothing to do with me at all. You really don’t need my permission to say whatever you like - presumably Morbid’s a big boy and can handle it.
So, nice of you to call me out on a totally different thread, but for my money, this is probably a better thread for it. No child should suffer the way Rowan did, the way Anthony Fuhr did, the way Dannarriah Finley did.

Dec 5, 2007 at 6:19 am -Grr.. BUHR. Sorry, y’all. Can’t spell the poor kid’s name. Thank God he’s not my cousin or I’d have to call myself out on it.
Pablo:
A trial’s gonna take awhile. Barry County has a PA that’s not even sure about the death penalty at this point. I think he’s waffling hoping enough time will pass that an impartial jury can be seated somewhere in the state. Ain’t gonna happen, not right now, not next month. Possibly next year if they move it to the St Louis hood where there are enough murders over a year to desensitize a jury pool.
As to the gory details, a lot of it came from statements made by Chris Collings and David Spears. Some of it is speculation and town gossip. Some things are coming out about the condition of Rowan’s body, but LE here is being very, very careful not to do anything that would cause a mistrial or overturn on appeal. I don’t know Barry County, but the deputies in Newton County have been having a pretty rough time with this case and they don’t even have the scumbags in their jail. I’ve heard that there’s been a lot of burnout and sick leave this year. They’ve had a church shooting, way more violent crime than normal, and now Rowan.

Dec 5, 2007 at 2:23 pm -I can empathize with these cops. This sheer brutality in such a small community is so heartbreaking, it defies description. Those 4 photos which preface this chain of comments paint a short life so tragic, it makes one tremble.
When the details emerge about her lice infections and just how horribly she was brutalized and destroyed by these guys, and how often and for how long, I hope it becomes a wake-up call to adults who decide to have kids they cannot afford to feed, and to moms and dads everywhere to value every moment they have with their kids and to make that extra effort to look after them until they can do so themselves.
Poor Rowan never had a chance, and she died in the most horrible way possible.
I am about to propose to someone and become a stepdad, and I have kids of my own from a previous marriage. The decision to marry someone with a child is quite serious, requiring extra commitment and time before marriage spent with mom and child as a family unit.
It was mentioned here that Rowan was conceived during a rape, and that her mom felt “mellow” on MySpace the day after her daughter’s body was fished out of the cave after having been savagely raped and killed. And Rowan was 9. I just do not get it. It shines a light on the most horrid aspects of humanity, sandwiched into a few tragic hours.
Rowan’s legacy seems today to be a symbol of what man is capable to doing to his fellow man, with all the gnarly details included. It would be nice if this case resulted in someone, even one person, doing something positive: loving their kids or stepkids, or doing anything to make a positive difference. It sounds so stupid, especially coming from me (I am not religious or an optimist), but this case is so heinous that I have to rant.
I know comments of this type have been posted before, but I just needed to get my 2 cents in.

Dec 5, 2007 at 5:53 pm -Hey - check out this story - and we all wondered about what the child services workers are doing - this answers it, NOTHING:
School official accused in abuse
Special education coordinator in Henry County, who is the twin babies’ grandmother, is implicated in case against the parents.
By Kathy Jefcoats
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/01/07
Clayton County police charged the grandmother and parents of 13-month-old twin boys with child abuse after discovering the children weigh less than 10 pounds each —- far below the 27- to 39-pound range for children that age.
The grandmother, Christi Ann Zelek, is the special education coordinator for Henry County schools. Clayton County police Chief Jeff Turner said she is also charged with failing to report the child abuse as state law requires education employees to do.
Zelek was teaching a class on early childhood development at Union Grove High School when Clayton police took her into custody.
“During the interview with police, Christi Zelek told us there was ‘nothing wrong with those children,’ ” said Officer William Clendenen.
The babies are in state custody while receiving medical care at Egleston Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Turner said the boys weigh 8 and 9 pounds.
The weight range for children their age is 27-39 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Zelek and her daughter, Tessa Noel Zelek, and the twins’ father, James Alvin McCart III, both 23, were arrested Thursday.
Turner said Christi Zelek went to the couple’s home at LaCosta Mobile Home Park in Lovejoy Nov. 20 and found the parents passed out and unresponsive. The severely malnourished twins were in another room, Turner said.
Turner said the grandmother deliberately evaded medical services intervention.
“Instead of calling emergency medical services, she called a family member in Fayetteville to come pick up the twins, specifically to keep police and state welfare from discovering the condition of the children,” Turner said Friday. “Then she cleaned up the mobile home before calling emergency medical services for the couple.”
Turner said the young couple was taken to Henry Medical Center, where McCart tested positive for cocaine and remained hospitalized several days. Tessa Zelek refused to take a drug test, he said, and left the hospital within hours, Turner said.
The relative who picked up the twins took them to Egleston hospital that same day.
A friend of that relative is a Clayton County police officer, Turner said, who notified authorities Monday.
Christi Zelek has worked for the Henry County schools since 2000, said schools spokesman Dr. Ethan Hildreth. He said she worked in an administrative capacity and had no direct responsibilities that involved working with students.
Hildreth said he is unsure of what will happen to Zelek’s position with the school system.
“We are just finding out through the media, this is truly breaking news for us,” he said Friday afternoon. “We plan to investigate fully and take the appropriate action.”
Hildreth said policy generally allows for an administrator who is arrested to be placed on leave but that each case is examined individually.

Dec 5, 2007 at 9:29 pm -You know, it’s cases like this that really make you realize that it is indeed a cycle, like Morbid said. For this grandmother to do what she did, I can imagine she wasnt the best mother herself. This leads to people like her daughter, who dont give a shit about their own kids. Not saying that the people who abuse children shouldnt be blamed because their parents abused them, just saying that WE NEED TO BREAK THIS CYCLE. SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY. Sorry for writing in caps Morbid, but I am fed up and sick. And you know what? It feels good, that’s why I come to this site. I want to feel fed up and sick of this. Maybe it will help me change something in some way. Maybe if enough people feel fed up and sick, we can all change this.
BTW, notice the mention of a “mobile home”? I seriously think that the majority cases are poverty related, like I said before.

Dec 5, 2007 at 11:12 pm -Rosie — Gross story and an interesting read posted in 746, but there’s a mistake in it. It says the kids are 13 months and weigh less than 10 lbs, but it says that NORMAL weight for that age is 27-39 lbs. No way. Not for a 13-month-old! Heck my 5-year-old (who is, admittedly, a peanut weighs 39 pounds, and my 3-year- old weighs somewhere between 28-30 lbs. No way a 13 monther could hit those weights! I wonder how the article got it so wrong?
