I would think his mother would have known his license was suspended due to the DUI. I really wonder how much his mother is covering up and why they are not persuing charges in her. Her whole story seems like it was attacked by a band of rabid moths with as many holes there are in it.

I agree with you, Barbara. I don’t think they ever intended to let her live even if she was able to survive the assault. They went too far this time (I’m ASSuming there were prior incidents) and they couldn’t hide from it.

I am have been reading this site for about two weeks now. I live right down the road from where they found Rowan Ford and for some reason I have felt drawn to finding out more about how such a thing was allowed to happen. I too would now like to move and get the hell out of Missouri. I am just kidding I really like where I live but I sure don’t feel that my kids are as safe as I thought they were a couple weeks ago. My wife and I have been really torn up about this little girl. Maybe because it happened so close to home and we have four girls. I just wish that I could have done something to help, I know that I did not know her but I really wish I could have just woke up that night with something telling me I had to get up, grab the gun and go. Only if the world worked that way, but it doesn’t and shit like this happens everyday. You know there are kids around where I live that need to be taken out of their homes because there parents are shitty, but you can call and call DCFS and nothing seems to happen. I had a sister who was really messed up on drugs and we called and called and they did nothing. After about 20 times of calling she finally fell asleep and set herself on fire one day. We put her out and took photos, than we went up to her room and video taped it because it was as bad as that Jaileens’ ladies house and than called DCFS. They got there and had her put in jail and gave my mom her kids. That was 13 years ago and my sister is still on drugs. The really sad thing is that most people end up really hurting or killing their kids before DCFS ever takes them away. The system works in favor of the parents even if they are shitty ones. I really hope that David and Chris go to the chair for what they did to take poor girl forget that injection shit.
I really feel bad for the sisters in all of this; they lost their little sister and know have her last moments played over and over again until these fuckers are put where they belong. We need to fast tack people like this, public hanging anyone?

482 impqueen “The fault is not the government’s. Yes, we can improve our social services systems. But the real fault is in the choices that people make to hurt children and to cover up for those doing the hurting. Colleen Spears looked the other way ”

The fault is not the governments?! Of course the faults is the governments. How many children can we hear about the get abused and worse, and the government had recieved news of it and done nothing? Far too many times. Of course the Mother is guilty here of not caring about what was going on and putting a stop to it. But that is the reason our government is supposed to be here, to protect the innocent from people like that. The men who did those things are monsters with deep pshycological issues and the mother has her own heap of issues as well. It would be wonderful to say that “well if every parent would just do their job, things like this wouldnt happen”. That is of course very true, but unfortunatly that is not the world we live in, all of the parents on this forum are obviously good parents and your children are blessed to have you. But there are so many children who are not blessed in that way and so many parents who should not be parents and do horrible things. That is where the government comes into play. And if you think that all our social system needs is a “little improvement” then you are obviously not edjucated on the issues, any social worker will tell you how absolutely frustrating their job is because in so many cases they cant do the things they need to make sure a child is protected. Also how could the government not be at fault when they let so many predators back on the street with barely even a slap on the wrist?

Kathy 483 “And you can talk about putting the blame on society sexualizing women but the truth is, the change needs to start at home. People need to stop LETTING society and the media raise their children. They need to learn right from wrong. All this shit was happening BEFORE Britney Spears and Bratz dolls. A rapist will rape a nun covered from head to toe. I’m pretty sure little Rowan didn’t look at all like some porn star in her pajamas and asleep in her bed.”

    497 Kathy
“I think children dressing provocatively is in poor taste, but it has nothing to do with why offenders do what they do. It is an illness. they like children for the simple fact that they LIKE CHILDREN. Saying that it is because the way someone dresses is putting blame on the victim.”

I am sorry that you misunderstood what I was saying here. I did not say anything about rowan dressing inapproprialty or that she in any way caused what happened to her. But the way children are being shown in general as being sexual creatures can certainly feed a man with such twisted desires. All he has to do is look at a childrens halloween catalogue to see that little girls are “sexy”, then he can go online and find porn sites with young children and so on. There has always been child molesters and there always will be but there are also certain people that maybe were just having fantasies but then they see all the media and the media shows them that their fantasies are normal and okay. Then their obsession escalates and they act upon it. This is a fairly normal pshycological profile for many molesters.
Also when you said “People need to stop LETTING society and the media raise their children.” I think you thought you were disagreeing with me, but thats largely what I meant. Aren’t those people part of our society? I am refering to those parents who want to be “cool” and let their children do anything and wear anything. Or those parents that just dont care enough to teach their children anything. Unfortunatly they make up a large part of our society.

I do not want to argue. Of course I think that the parents should be responsible and they should not allow these things to happen, but I also know that unfortunatly we do not live in that utopian world. So it is the job of people (our government) who are responsible and who do care to step in and make sure things like this don’t happen. I am speaking as someone who knows from experience. I went through a triple custody battle, lived in an orphanage. Dealt with parents that severly neglected, parents that abused, I dealt with physical abuse, my sister dealt with sexual abuse. I am 24 now and am still trying to straighten things out and have a normal life. I have gone to therapy my whole life, I know what I am talking about when it comes to grown ups that cannot and do not know how to be adults. Our government needs to step up in so many situations where innocent people are being abused, from young children to the disabled to the elderly. There are to many evil sadistic people out there. We need a better system in place to see that they can’t hurt people the way they do!

    irtabby,

I think you’re misinterpreting what I’m saying in re: the government’s responsibility. I am a former psych nurse. I worked in hospice, home health, brain injury and psych units for years. There’s not much I haven’t seen, and I am well aware of the limitations of social service programs: understaffing and overabuse.

However - it’s not the government’s job to parent children. It’s the parents’ job to parent children. It is our responsibility to raise our children safely and well. Yes, our social service systems need improvement. But in both Rowan’s case and Anthony Buhr’s case the ball droppage did not come from the government. In Rowan’s case there were not reports of abuse filed - only head lice. Colleen Spears and David Spears should have been protecting and caring for Rowan the way they led DFS to believe they were. A child will not magically tell a social worker she doesn’t know that she’s being hurt. The fault for Rowan is not in the government, it’s with those who hurt her and who allowed her to fall into harm’s way due to their adult choices.

Same goes for Anthony Buhr. There were legal custody issues that were deliberately defied by Frank Buhr, placing his child in harm’s way. He knew this. He chose to return his child to abuse. Anthony’s mother, Lena, chose to allow or participate in her child’s abuse. Bryon Griffin chose to rape and kill that child. You tell me how the government was supposed to have prevented that when nobody in the family was stepping up to protect that child. Yes, the government fails and fails often - but if the parents didn’t fail in the first place, it wouldn’t be an issue.

HOTLINE, people. Seriously. Just hotline like hell until someone gets a clue.

Tabby, i’m sorry about your abuse issues. I suspect that most women who follow cases like this do have an abuse history - I know several other posters here do. I do, but I don’t feel comfortable sharing more than that. Because it’s not about me, and also because i’m not brave enough to discuss it in a public forum. I’m always impressed by people that are that brave and strong, and I wish you peace and comfort in your healing.

We have to begin to take personal responsibility for our children and stop waiting for an agency to fix it all better. Until we get off our nation’s collective ass and start caring about the kids we see every day, we have no business expecting the state to come in, wave its magic wand and make the shitty parents go away. No matter how great that would be, it isn’t reality.

thanks Morbid for the info on public defenders. I think if I was the PD for a creep this these to POS, I would do a shitty job and help them along to prison. I have some outlaw-inlaws who are “guests” at Barry County jail. Next time I see their mom I might ask if they are giving Chris and David hell behind bars. I imagine it will be after the first of the year before any major court ordeal comes for David and Chris. Especially since Chris still doesnt have a public defender as of yet.

As for provocative dressing, I saw Rowan a few times when we would go to the church at Stella for Angel Foods, and she was always dressed in jeans and tshirt. And believe me I am old fashioned enough that if a kid is dressed inappropriately I am the first to notice. ONe of my nieces came out of the house dressed in short shorts and a belly shirt and I asked her if it was her night to work the corner of 13th street. So I really dont think that was the case with Rowan. But since Chris already had a juvie record for molestation, I think he was just a time bomb ticking away. And Colleen may not have known about his past. I am not defending her as I have made several comments on my personal opinion of her earlier in these posts. I havent changed my mind either. But it might be the difference between having a demon in your house and having Satan himself in your house. She might have known Chris was bad, but just not THAT bad. KWIM?

hey I just did a yahoo search of David spears and it turned up the Turner Report Blog and this was posted on it.

Website names Spears, Collings among five most creepy MySpace criminals

Australian website Tech.blorge.com has named David Spears and Chris Collings, the accused killers of nine-year-old Rowan Ford of Stella among their Five Most Creepy MySpace Criminals:

Recently Chris Collings, along with David Spears, were accused of raping and murdering nine-year-old Rowan Ford. Spears was Ford’s stepfather, and Collings a friend of Spears. Both men had MySpace profiles, though only Collings’ was open to the public. The site caught the eye of investigators because it featured images of grim reapers and sexual acts, and also made references to drug taking. According to KOLR/KSFX, which talked to a forensic psychologist, the MySpace page could be considered a ”rehearsal of a fantasy”:

“It’s something many sexual offenders do before they commit a crime. While some people will stop at the fantasy stage, others can only fantasize for so long before they act out what they’ve rehearsed.”

Both men are charged with one count each of first degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape.

also, this was on there about David going to court Monday.

Monday court appearance set for accused killer on DWI charge

David W. Spears, 25, Stella, the man who is accused of the brutal rape and murder of his nine-year-old stepdaughter Rowan Ford, has a pre-trial hearing set for 10 a.m. Monday before Judge John LePage in McDonald County Circuit Court on a DWI charge.

According to McDonald County Circuit Court records, a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper arrested Spears Feb. 22 on charges of driving while intoxicated and driving without a valid driver’s license.

Justice has not been swift for David Spears in this case, according to court records. After his April 2 arraignment, Spears has yet to appear in court. An April 30 pre-trial conference was rescheduled due to a conflict for Spears’ attorney, Abe Paul. The hearing was also rescheduled on May 17, May 21, June 18, July 16, July 30, Aug. 29, Sept. 25, and Oct. 30. On some of those dates, it was postponed because Paul had conflicts. On other dates, no reasons are given on the case.net files.

McDonald County Circuit Court records also show that Spears, again represented by Paul, filed a civil action against the Missouri Department of Revenue on Feb. 3, 2005, appealing the revocation of his driver’s license. Eventually, he lost the case, the records indicate.

Monday’s hearing is likely to be postponed due to the security that would be necessary both to transport Spears from Barry County where he is awaiting trial on first degree murder, forcible rape, and statutory rape charges, and to hold the hearing in the McDonald County Courthouse.

Notice he has an attorney for this ordeal. So why did he apply for public defender instead of having the attorney for this, who had filed for delay as recent as October, take care of this situation? Wish I could find out something as to what they did Monday.

At the beginning, someone had posed a question about “statutory rape”. I am curious, has anyone found out the answer to that one yet - how can they be charged with statutory rape, when that implies consent? - 9 yr olds cannnot consent.

I cannot fathom the statutory rape. Who implied she consented? Maybe this question has been answered - but I missed it. HELP!!

And to POS David and his lawyer Paul - I can see him having Paul, possibly appointed to him as a public defender, for the DUI. Public offenders are not appointed in civil matters, or at least not in NC - so he must have been hired.

If he could afford to hire him for civil matters, why not to defend his sorry life? Or because of the level of attention this case will require - perhaps Paul is not a “murder trial” lawyer. A lot of lawyers choose not go to Appellet courts, because of the “in depth” procedures - much less take on heinous murder trials. Paul may not have been qualified to represent him on this level or Paul possibly, if a private lawyer, refused to defend his sorry ass - as could all of the private attorneys in that area. I know I would have refused him as an attorney. Or, perhaps, POS David had a “little money” but not enough to pay for a “murder trial lawyer”. I don’t know - just glad not to be paying taxes in MO today. I couldn’t stand to know I “helped” - no matter how indirect it was or that I did not have any choice. I’m sure I will get to help my own POS here in NC at some point, but glad its not today!!!!

thepooh, in response to your statutory rape question, in Missouri, statutory rape is considered anyone 21 or older having sex with anyone under 17, regardless of consent.

I asked my B-I-L(major case detective) when this first broke about that. He said with both forcible and statutory rape charges, they are stacking,in other words going for everything they can.

He also explained that statutory crimes are easier to prove with a mandatory sentence(although sentencing for forcible IS harsher),and that in MO,statutory rape is this: having sexual relations with anyone under 14 if the suspect is 14 or older-period-consensual or not. It is also harsher if the victim is 12 or under.

Is that clear as mud now? =)

The answer may have been posted all ready but I was wondering does this state have the death penalty? Not that it would give us any quick relief it takes so long for the states to finally do it.

And someone else posted wondering why Nancy Grace or Greta Van whatever hadn’t focued on this case and I was wondering the same thing - there have been over 10,000 views of this site alone. No disrespect to the Holloway family but I’m really sick of that case, Rowan’s case happened here and is a prime example to show others what not to do when raising children. I think Oprah should focus on something like this as well instead of children in another country.

Good point about Oprah. My mom drives me nuts, everything she sees on Oprah she goes crazy about. It could be the stupidest thing, but because Oprah likes it or believes in it, she HAS to have it. I tell her to stop being so gullible.

General question, do you think it would be possible to start a petition, or write a letter to someone, to ask that David and Chris receive the death penalty (if they are convicted, of course)? I think the last I heard the prosecutor’s office hadnt decided yet if they were going for the death penalty.

I’m suprised about a CASA ad and really happy. Casa doesn’t really advertise, the money is tight and it goes to the programs. I was looking at the sight again and had to smile at the 10 hour a month average volunteer time. Over the course of your kid assignment that’s probably an average but if DHS is pushing to put a kid back into a bad home and your kid has a good foster placement and doesn’t want to go back; you are there every time they petition to tell them to go to hell. I loved that part. (I’m sick that way)

Justamom, you have seen issues where a kid is happy in a foster home, their parents abused them, and DHS WANTS to put them back home??? Why???? I dont understand, what is the reasoning behind that?

Also, I signed up on the website to be contacted by someone in our local chapter (here in miami, fl), but I must say I am a little scared. I’m scared that I’ll have my heart broken :(

    JUSTAMOM2

    Nov 28, 2007 at 2:58 pm -

solange, signing up just means you want to help, paperwork, giving kids a ride to a court date, anything you are comfortable and capable of doing. And yes, there are many times DHS has said the parent or parents have met the requirements for having the children replaced to them and the child is terrified and doesn’t want to go. Very rarely will a judge refuse a gal’s request that the child stay in the foster care. You have only one responsibility, it isn’t to the parents, the government or to DHS requirements it’s to that childs needs. You don’t have to listen to what DHS says, if that child has found a happy foster placement and is thriving and doing well and wants to continue and the foster family wants the placement to continue you fight to let that child stay.

You’d be amazed at the face these parents show DHS and the face they show a CASA worker. They think you have no say so, no power so they act just the way they are. Then they are so shocked when you come in and tell the judge when you talked to the parents they were drunk and high and the mom had a black eye and the boyfriend was a bastard. It’s priceless the looks on their faces. I had one mom tell me I was a bigoted bitch and only saw one side of the story ..I laughed and said, you’re absolutely correct, I see just the child’s side. Shut her up.

I have not changed anything at this point - but I don’t feel as helpless as I did and actually do feel that with the info you provided and CASA that I may be able to affect some “real change”. I know I am probably dreaming - but we gotta start somewhere.

Oh my god, I cant believe that Justamom! Good for you! I cant believe those people are that dumb. Thanks for what you said about the different things that I could do as a volunteer, that makes me feel so much braver, knowing that I can start with something a little easier and working my way up from there.

One thing that I dont understand, and I know that all cases are different, but maybe you guys can answer this for me. WHY do these people fake and fight and try to get their kids back? Do they really love them and think that abusing them is not a bad thing? Or do they all do it for government benefits of some sort? I just dont get it. Kids are expensive and time-consuming, why would you want one if you dont even love them enough to not hurt or neglect them????

solange and thepooh5, the coolest thing is the more people you tell the more help CASA gets. This is just so great!

solange, a lot of the DHS contact is welfare recipients and part of the reason they want those kids with them is money. I also think most really do love their kids but are so clueless as to how to raise a child. A lot are victims of their own upbringing and just have no idea it’s wrong. Those are parents that if they go to parenting classes they then get gradual visitation if the child wishes. Most kids want their moms and dads even after abuse, that’s when it’s hard. They want so badly to have their parents love them the way they see on TV or friends parents. Sometimes it takes years to reunite a child with parents but it’s worth it when it works out.

JUSTAMOM2 - I gotta ask one question - worth it to who? If its the child, then great - if that is their choice and is what the child wants, which it is most of the time. All children want mom & dad to love them and can’t understand their parents are POS. One of the hardest things to get kids to see is - its not their fault - they did not do anything wrong, they did not do anything to deserve their treatment. Do you know of very many success stories or is it just an occasional happening?

Thanks for all the info JUSTAMOM2.

Oh it’s ALWAYS the child’s choice! That’s what CASA is about! If there is hope, if the parents are willing to go to rehab, parenting classes and family therapy and only if this is what the child wants then you bet, we support that child. Most kids want that and when those parents that are willing to work their asses off it’s a good result. The work isn’t done when or if the child is reunited, you still call the child, get reports from therapists, talk to the teachers, take them to a movie even. It’s a very slow process in finding out what the child wants, is what the child wants really what is best, are the parents sincere in wanting the child back and most importantly, will that child be safe. The focus is on making sure the child knows it’s not their fault. When they know someone is there who has no other interest but that kid, who doesn’t care what mom says and wants, doesn’t care what DHS wants, doesn’t care about anything but what is going to be the best for that kid, they start to realize that they have power, what they want and need is the main goal here. They finally have a voice and it’s a powerful thing for them!

CASA is EXTREMELY successful! It’s a proven fact that when CASA is involved the success rate goes way up! You give a kid a voice and you give a kid power. Success may mean reuniting with a parent, or staying with a foster family or changing foster families. Success is making sure that child is safe and when they have an advocate they know they can say anything they want or need to, good or bad and it’s important and it’s listened to and it matters. CASA works.

Least anyone has forgotten. Colleen Spears is pure scum. Here are some preliminary facts, barring the heinous crime.

    Kid infested with lice.
Fat, miserable, out of work fuck of a deviant husband.
Animal raper was #1 friend on MySpace.

She needs to be flushed like the turd she is.

Where the reality show where we cash into these shit dens, cams rolling, so we can see the t.v. dinners, meth pipe and fat David playing with his boner to PeeWee Herman reruns?

There’s a bounty for a pic of his garbage eating mom. I hear she’s at the trailer feeding the goats.

I have not heard whether or not Johnnie Cox is going to go for the death penalty yet.I am really not sure why he is waffling on it, unless he is worried that being in the middle of the Bible Belt here that he would have less chance of a conviction if he asks for it. Dont know, but we are coming up on re-election for his office so I Think he is really concerned with how this goes. Tomorrow the newspaper comes out and we can see what the local update is. Myrna Spears has not made a peep since this all broke that I can find.

well um death watch that was really funny, but did your mom not love you enough or something so you have to rag on mine. I have already said she is not the poster mom and I am really trying to get your point of view. But all it looks like to me is that you’ve had some bad outcome with your mom. And for everyone about what my sister looked like in that cave I know about it and I have nightmares about it. I do have a heart it has been broken since this whole thing started when I found out my sister was missing. Yes I do know what is wrong with my mother but I’m feed her to the wolves that you are, you guys just keep all your lowly opinions of her and keep posting them I don’t care anymore. I just want to see these dumb f**** pay that is all I want and to potentially help some other family that may need help. So for those of you I do talk to outside of this website you are more than welcome to talk to me. But as for “being the sheep in the lions den” it’s done. Bye you guys nice knowing you…nothing againist you morbid love the site and if you want more info you know how to contact me. But it was nice knowing you guys.

Janice let me say that I’m sorry for all of the pain you have had during your life and please know that people don’t understand or know the situation before Rowan died. Maybe you can give us a little insight as to how you were raised and if your Mom raised and paid attention to Rowan or only tolerated her - and I don’t mean that in a bad way, “tolerating” is what some Mom’s do after so many children. I defended your Mom in previous posts as to someone was making a fuss that she wore green to the funeral, I said she didn’t seem to be a dress wearing kind of woman and maybe it was either all she had or someone loaned i
