Rowan Ford, 9, Missing; Stepfather Uncooperative

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. — I wanted to get this story posted now, before the stepfather is eventually charged, or I am totally surprised that someone else is.

Rowan Ford, 9, was last seen by her mother, Colleen Spears, as she was getting ready for bed around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Colleen then left for her job at a Wal-Mart store. Rowan’s stepfather, David Spears, left the home with two male friends around 10:45 p.m. David Spears told investigators that he looked in on the girl in her bedroom before leaving, and she was sleeping.

David returns home at around midnight, but does not check on the girl. He calls his mother at around 1 a.m. so that he could borrow her car. She brings him the car and waits in the house watching TV until her son to got back around 7 a.m.

Spears gets home around 9 a.m. and is not greeted by her daughter like she normally is and wakes up David and asks him about Rowan. He states that he doesn’t know where she is and has not seen her, but that she had possibly woke him up in the middle of the night stating she was going to see a friend. Then, for some reason that is not explained, the girl is not reported missing until 6:50 p.m.

Investigators state that the mother has been cooperative and distraught, but that the stepfather has been the opposite. Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland stated that Spears has been “less than cooperative.” Copeland said Rowan has brown hair and brown eyes, is 47 inches tall and weighs 62 pounds, and anyone with information should contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Department at (417) 451-8300.

But in my opinion, the only way this girl will be found is if someone finds where the stepfather dumped her.

I use to live around the Stella area and this was a shock to learn what has happened in this quiet community. If this David Spears is who I am thinking it is, the law needs to really to keep an eye on him. If its not the one I do apologize. I pray that they find Rowan and well and I pray for the family. Ok I do not know this man but I just saw an interview on the local news with him and yes he is distraught. I am from this area however and even though I cannot load the photo mentioned above how can you judge this family just because of the place they live in? Ok yes the mother should have reported this sooner. Like at 9:05 am in my opinion but have you been in her shoes? Are you less than well off and can you afford a nicer place than them? These people are grieving and you cannot say he is guilty without the facts. THis area is full of hollows, hills, acres and acres of forest and if you were going to hide a body it sure wouldn’t take a 3 hour drive to do so. Can you imagine living with the guilt that you not only lost your child but you were responsible for putting the man who did it in her life to start with? I just know from experience that being blamed for something you didn’t do only for everyone to realize it later can ruin your life. Or at the very least make it very miserable for a long time. But before any one posts, I have never been accused of abducting or killing anyone either.

During their search, the FBI also conducted a thorough search of the home where Rowan’s stepfather has been staying. Copeland say’s they went through David Spears mother’s home because they felt it was a place they needed to search. Rowan’s stepfather’s role in the incident has raised many questions after authorities say he lied and changed his story about the night of her disappearance. At this point no charges have been filed. An 11am press conference is being held this morning at the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. We’ll have more information as it becomes available.

Area law enforcement officers confirm the body of nine year old Rowan Ford has been found. The body was found in a sinkhole on private land in eastern McDonald County, which is about ten miles from the girls house. She had been missing since last Saturday.
Sheriff Ken Copeland says the FBI along with Sheriff’s deputies and other volunteers searched places in McDonald County, Barry County and Newton County yesterday.
During their search, the FBI also conducted a thorough search of the home where Rowan’s stepfather has been staying. Copeland say’s they went through David Spears mother’s home because they felt it was a place they needed to search. Rowan’s stepfather’s role in the incident has raised many questions after authorities say he lied and changed his story about the night of her disappearance. At this point no charges have been filed. An 11am press conference is being held this morning at the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
