WESTCLIFFE, CO - During a homecoming parade on Saturday, Courtney Curtis, 15, tried to climb the stairs on one of the slow-moving floats being used in the parade. For unknown reasons, she slipped and fell under the trailer and the first set of tires stopped on top of her. She had been riding a float and tossing candy to spectators, but got off briefly when the procession turned around at the west end of Main Street. Courtney was alive when flown to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs for treatment, but later died. Classes have been canceled at Custer County High School, where Principal Barbara Jones stated that “Everyone knows everyone, and we are a very close-knit community. Courtney has siblings in preschool, the elementary school and the middle school. Her mom is a cook at the school. No one is untouched,”
She also remarked that the school had just culminated a great homecoming week with fun, new activities that included a big community dinner and bonfire Thursday evening. Because of the accident, the homecoming football game with Crowley County and dance were canceled. “As I look back, some people commented it was the best homecoming ever, but Saturday was a horrible day. This will change the face of homecoming for years to come,” Jones said.
